Fighting viruses this winter

The new year offers new beginnings, but unfortunately, it is also a peak period for the transmission of colds, flu, Covid and other respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses. This year the trifecta of respiratory illnesses is especially hitting Connecticut. Being inside more, in dry air, with the proximity of other people leads to more infections.

Granby Lions make the holidays brighter

The annual Granby Lions Club Christmas Tree delivery drew many Lions, their family members, GMHS Leos and students to quickly unload 500 trees on Nov. 26.

Friends of Holcomb Farm

You may think things are quiet at Holcomb Farm in the winter months, but you would be wrong. While the fields rest under the ice and snow, our farm crew is busy harvesting and distributing the winter crop.

Robins in the winter?!

Hikers on Holcomb Farm’s Tree Trail pass a large kiosk on their way up the initial hill. The kiosk’s front side has a map of the trails; the back side has seasonal information on trees, biological processes and birds. The new bird information that went up this month is about robins that we see in Granby during the winter.

Support for Lofink

In looking forward to this fall’s local elections, we all likely know how important financial planning is for Granby’s fiscal health. For the Board of Finance, I’d like to recommend Jim Lofink to voters as a thoughtful, experienced Granby policy leader who has consistently demonstrated his value in promoting intelligent and informed public discourse—exactly what we need to balance tax burdens with service needs.

I encourage everyone to vote for Monica Logan for the Granby Board of Education. Monica is committed to listening to all community members and is dedicated to ensuring that the Board of Education discussions and decisions are more open.

Support for Nolan

We were pleased to read that long-time West Granby resident Donna Nolan is running for election to the Board of Education. Granby could certainly use a smart, tireless, responsible advocate like Donna to help strengthen the quality of education in our town with a level of fairness and fiscal discipline.

Support for Nolan and Thrall

I write this letter in support of Donna Nolan and Sarah Thrall for the Board of Education. Sarah Thrall currently serves as Chairman and has navigated the Granby Public Schools through one of the most challenging times in history—keeping our schools open for in-person learning during COVID-19. Sarah’s experience and dedication to the board as a working mom of five means she shows up at every subcommittee meeting, board meeting, graduation, open house, convocation, PAC, SEPTO and PTO meetings and spends countless hours in service to the education of our students. Sarah’s board experience and dedication speaks for itself.

Support for Roberts

We are writing to encourage all Granby residents to vote for Dave Roberts for the Granby Board of Finance in the Nov. 2 election. Dave and his family live in our West Granby neighborhood, and since retiring in 2017 he has been a very active volunteer throughout the Granby community.

Support for Rome

With a modest and endurable confidence, intelligence and genuine care for others, Kelly Rome has been an inspirational mentor in my life for as long as I can remember. As a young adult starting out in my career, it is important to have both female and male role models.

Support for Sanzo

I’m writing in support of Whitney Sanzo for the Board of Education. Whitney and I connected nine years ago when our families were both fostering children.

Support for Thrall

We are pleased to endorse Sarah Thrall for reelection to the Granby Board of Education. We have known Sarah for over 15 years and have always been impressed with her service to the community.

Support for Tsaptsinos

I have known James Tsaptsinos since he moved to Granby nine years ago. He is a great neighbor and he is a person that contributes to the community. His experience and background will make him an excellent member of the Board of Finance.

Granby Road Race founders honored

Fifty years ago, David Bale, David Hildreth and Dennis Lobo met in the Bales’ kitchen and organized a race to be held on Earth Day that year. The year was 1971, it was the very first Earth Day, and the road race they planned started a tradition that celebrated its 50th year on Sept. 18.
