Stretching budget to support every student

Each spring, the development of the school district budget brings an important conversation to our community. As superintendent, I understand that our schools represent both one of Granby’s greatest strengths and one of the largest investments our taxpayers make each year. Our responsibility is clear: to provide the best possible opportunities for our students while being thoughtful stewards of public resources.

2026 GAA Annual Scholarship

Graduating high school seniors who are planning to pursue further education in the visual arts are invited to apply for the 2026 Granby Artist Association Annual Scholarship. The scholarship is a cash award of $1,000 given to a graduating senior with advanced artistic skills to be used for upcoming college expenses.

GAA Meet the artist event

GAA and the Granby-Simsbury Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored a reception on March 9 for GAA’s Simsbury Public Library Art Exhibition. More than 90 people enjoyed refreshments and viewed the many works on display by GAA exhibiting members. The next GAA exhibition will be the annual All Members Show at the East Granby Public Library in June.

From Read Across America to Read Across Granby

In celebration of Read Across America Week, members of the National English Honor Society from Granby Memorial High School paid a special visit to Kelly Lane Primary and Wells Road Intermediate schools, spending time reading with elementary students and sharing their love for reading.

Baroque Concert at South Church

The Bruce Porter Memorial Music Series will present Treasures of the Baroque, with Les Amies de Theodore,at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 22 at the South Campus of Granby Congregational Church, 242 Salmon Brook Street.

Japanese Barberry, Invasive of the Month

Japanese barberry was imported to the US in the late 1800s and widely planted in landscapes, often as hedges to prevent through-passage or in problem areas where other plants did not grow. Once established, it crowds out other plants, changing soil chemistry and inhibiting forest regeneration.

Kasia Kaczkowski, of Granby, has been named to the University of Hartford’s dean’s list for the fall semester.
Nick Lang, of Granby, was named to the Presidents List at Lincoln Tech for the 4th quarter of 2025.

Spring gardening advice

In northern Connecticut, spring gardening (March through May) focuses on indoor seed starting, cleaning up debris, improving soil and planting cool-weather crops. Start peppers, tomatoes and eggplants indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost date.

Memories of the Marquis of Granby

In 1969 in Granby, the Marquis of Granby Fyfe and Drum Corps was the only game in town for a kid my age to find something fun to do after supper. At age 11, I became an original member of a ragtag group of what began as mostly un-musical kids. I became a “fifer” but looking back and assessing my lack of talent and precision, I may have been better suited as a drummer.

Memories

Today, if an umbrella turns inside out and breaks, we would probably get a new one. When I was a little girl in Port Chester, N.Y., on Main Street there was an “umbrella man” who had a little cart on the sidewalk and, for a small charge, would repair the umbrella.
