AEP to hold benefit concert

Africa Education Partnership (AEP), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving communities in Nigeria, felt the sting of the global pandemic along with thousands of other organizations. A benefit concert scheduled in late March 2020 was cancelled as the country shut down and regrouped.

East Granby Public Library events

Drop-in Construction Zone: Every Tuesday in July, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the main conference room. For ages 4-12 years with caregiver. Drop-in and explore the building stations.

Memory Walk held

Mary’s Place, A Center for Grieving Children and Families, held its ninth annual Memory Walk, on May 15 at Northwest Park in Windsor.

In Town Focus

Membership in the Salmon Brook Historical Society, 208 Salmon Brook Street, offers many benefits including free tours, newsletters, annual dinner in April, Christmas house tour and Wassail party in December and the opportunity to learn and help preserve Granby history.

Bottle/Can Fundraiser

Please consider donating your bottles and cans to the Granby 4-H Robotics program on Saturday, Dec. 5, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Congregational Church.

East Granby Public Library Events

Pokemon Adventure: Saturday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Explore our outdoor grounds and search for Pokémon. Roll the dice and see if you can capture the Pokémon or if they will run away.

The Senior Skinny

The Granby Senior Center will offer all Special Events and Lifetime Learning programs for free to all current members during the months of November and December. This excludes exercise classes.

Trash Holiday: Thursday, Nov. 26 —Thanksgiving—is a holiday for Paine’s. All Thursday and Friday trash pickups will be delayed by one day that week.

For maximum social distancing and safe, convenient library access, Curbside Library Pickup continues to be a great option. Library materials can be reserved online through the catalog or by telephone, and then patrons can schedule a pick-up appointment—no need to come inside.

Celebrating creepy, cute and creative

On Oct. 3, the Granby Public Library hosted Goofy Gourds and Petrifying Pumpkins on the lawn at the main branch. The most outlandish designs earned prizes for participants and everyone received treats —no tricks!

Granby’s first female state representative

The stone house at 109 West Granby Road is where Helen Green lived all her life. Green was the first woman from Granby to represent the 7th District in the state legislature and she dedicated her life to public service and education.

Registrars of Voters

Only 31 percent of the town’s voters have requested absentee ballots as of Oct. 16. If you wisely chose to do so, you should have received your ballot in the mail.

This month the NOT WANTED campaign is sponsoring the first in a series of events to remove invasive plants from a visible public site in town. It will be a safe and family-friendly event with tools and expertise provided.

Friends of Holcomb Farm

If you Google “farming in November,” you will find lots of interesting descriptors: a time of transitions, a time for gleaning, a time to take stock. At Holcomb Farm, our strategic focus on “growing the growing season” means that while the last CSA summer share has been distributed, and the retail farm store has closed for the year, the farming continues.

Help us provide food to families in need

November is typically when we hold our annual Harvest Dinner and Silent Auction, our single largest fundraiser in support of Fresh Access, through which Holcomb Farm grows and distributes produce to people in need in Granby and the greater Hartford Region. But, of course, there is nothing typical about 2020: so, no Harvest Dinner fundraiser this year.
