Technology plan aims to make Granby a “smart town”

At the Dec. 5 meeting of the Granby Board of Selectmen, Town Manager Erica Robertson presented an update on the town’s Technology Plan. The primary goal of the plan is for the town to strive to be a “smart town,” that is one that leverages technology to increase efficiencies and improve the quality of services for its residents.

Starting 2023 off strong

During December and January we welcomed the community into the Granby Memorial High School auditorium for high school and middle school band and choral concerts. We are extremely proud of our students and staff for their outstanding performances. The music programs in our schools truly have a tremendous impact on students’ growth and development.

GMHS senior named DAR Good Citizen

Karen DiMenna, Good Citizen Committee Chairperson of the Abigail Phelps Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Inc. (DAR), announced that Kylie Coxon of Granby Memorial High School, is a recipient of the DAR Good Citizen Award.

GMHS broadcasting studio premieres

Beginning this quarter, the talent at GMHS will be hitting their “marks” and studying their “sides”, while the “grips” “check the gate” and give “last looks” before calling “action” in the new TV production studio.

GMHS presents Little Shop of Horrors

Granby Memorial High School’s Dramatic Arts, in cooperation with Music Theater International, is proud to announce rehearsals have begun for this year’s spring musical production of Little Shop of Horrors.

Hundreds of voter inquiries sent in annual canvass

Every year the Registrar’s office is required to identify those voters on the official voter registry who have moved out of town through a process of a selective canvass of voters. You can help by letting the registrars know if you or your grown children have moved.

Health Notes

Caring for a loved one can bring incredible rewards—both physical and emotional. Caregiving roles take on countless shapes and forms. It can be assisting older adults, the ill, and disabled friends and family members, and every day help in small and big tasks.

UNICO News

The Granby chapter of UNICO—the nation’s largest Italian-American service organization—inducted its new officers at a recent chapter meeting.

Happy 90th Birthday, Roger!

Everyone at the Drummer congratulates Roger Hayes on his 90th birthday and thanks him for the many years he has contributed as treasurer of the Citizens for a Better Granby board and his service with many other important town organizations. If you see him around town, wish him a happy birthday!

VOTE NOV. 2!

The 2020 COVID precautions are being implemented again this year to ensure the safety of both poll workers and voters. If you plan to come to the polls please plan for a long wait, be patient, wear a mask, and dress warmly—it will take extra time to vote, especially with 10 races to cast votes in.

Planting with a view

Friends of Holcomb Farm volunteers Walter Ford, Jack Lareau and Nicole Cloutier participated in a tree planting day on the Holcomb Tree Trail in October.

Radium Girls opens at high school

Granby Performing Arts at Granby Memorial High School presents the play Radium Girls on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5 and 6 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at GMHS Auditorium.

The committee’s goal was to identify the unmet needs of the community created by the COVID-19 crisis and to develop methods to assist the citizens and businesses recover.

News from Public Works

Trash Holiday: Thursday, Nov. 25, (Thanksgiving) is a holiday for Paine’s. All Thursday and Friday trash pickups will be delayed by one day that week. 

Thanks for Used Book Sale

The Friends of the Granby Public Library held its 38th Used Book Sale in September after a two year wait due to COVID restrictions last year. It was another successful sale and a welcome return of our patrons who look forward to this annual event.

Fund research for cultivated meat

I was thrilled to learn the U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving $10 million over five years to Tufts University to establish a National Institute for Cellular Agriculture. The institute will conduct open-access research into cultivated meat.

Support for Eastwood

We are writing in support of Val Eastwood, candidate for First Selectwoman. We have been friends with Val for some time. In fact, we had the opportunity to help her with the care of her mother while she was under hospice care at Val’s home earlier this year.

Support for Emery

We are writing in support of Jenny Emery’s candidacy for election to Granby’s Board of Finance. After a very successful, 40-year career in risk management and finance, in which she worked with thousands of towns and schools across the country, Jenny has chosen to invest her considerable energy, intelligence, and enthusiasm into the town she loves. Already, Granby is the better for it. One need only look at her volunteer work around town.

Support for Lofink

I have known Jim Lofink for over eight years, and have worked with him in a number of different capacities. I know from personal experience that whenever Jim decides to take on a commitment, he gives 100 percent of his energy, effort, and focus to the task at hand.

This note is to support Monica Logan for the Granby Board of Education. I have known Monica since shortly after we both moved to Granby six years ago, and am excited at the possibility of having someone as knowledgeable, dedicated, creative and empathetic as she is to serve our town and the future of Granby on our Board of Education.
