Granby nonprofits’ advertising funded by GCF grant

Is your nonprofit looking to spread the news about a fundraiser? Or is your group seeking new members or leaders but don’t know how to get the word out?
Last year, Citizens for a Better Granby (publisher of the Drummer) received a generous grant from the Granby Community Fund (GCF) in order to help other Granby nonprofits raise their visibility within the community. The CBG Board uses the grant funds to finance advertising for nonprofit organizations that are based in Granby and operate with a small budget.

This Hot Vidalia Onion Dip is truly one of the easiest recipes—and receives rave reviews every time! It is a perfect addition to any appetizer menu, any event and, most importantly, a delicious addition for any and all holiday gatherings in the coming months!

In The Margins — Women and books and libraries

A particular kind of mood is conjured up in November: a book read beside the stove, a novel tucked into a bag, a warm kitchen, a skirt drying beside the radiator, a poem read before bed. A domestic scene, perhaps, but not exclusively. An inner life can extend beyond the household. But many times, that’s where it all begins.

Friends of Granby Libraries’ upcoming events

The Friends of Granby Public Libraries are still accepting donations of gently-used baby, children and teen books—published in the last ten years, no rips or stains, books only—through end of day Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Granby Public Library in advance of the Fourth Annual Granby Children’s Book Festival.

SBHS restoring Granby Cemetery gravestones

Three years ago, the historic gravestone restoration service Beyond the Gravestone began an important project at the Granby Cemetery: restoring the many tombstones that had cracked, broken or begun to lean with age. Since then, owners Will Cornell and his wife, Lisa, and their crew have made remarkable progress, bringing many of these historic markers back to life.

Bloody urine can be more than a UTI

One of the more common issues we see with our pets is blood in the urine. This is often accompanied by other clinical signs like straining, going more often and discomfort. The first thing most people think of is a urinary tract infection, or UTI. While we can see these somewhat commonly in our pets, it is not the only reason for bloody urine.

Nodding Onion

Granby’s David Desiderato offers a beneficial and illuminating resource in his periodic Not Wanted column. Consider this a counterpart, highlighting a native wildflower each month. The starting point will be plants within the Granby Wildflower Meadow’s newly installed pocket teaching meadow.

Where do I begin?

It occurs to me that the average person wanting to learn how to knit or crochet probably has no idea where to begin. In my case, my poor, long-suffering mother taught me in my teens, but back then I wasn’t as mad for the craft as I am now and soon abandoned it.

Granby Lions honor veterans at Stand Down

On Sept. 18, the Granby Lions participated in the Veterans Stand Down event at the State Veterans Home in Rocky Hill for the fourth year in a row. It was one of six Stand Down locations in the state. The Granby Lions members collected toiletry items, clothing, eyeglasses and first aid items throughout the year to donate to the veterans.

Thanksgiving Thoughts

Outside, the day is cold but clear—a perfect day for football games and after dinner walks. Inside, in the kitchen, mother and her helpers prepare the meal for this special day of Thanksgiving. The heat from the turkey roasting in the oven steams the windows.

Is it cranberries or craneberries?

Bowls of cranberry sauce are as ubiquitous as the turkey itself on most Thanksgiving menus. Wisconsin is the major producer in the U.S. and most cranberry bogs in the Northeast are in Massachusetts, where there are still many historic, family-run bog farms.

Raising fish and Fish Kids

Last month, middle school students enrolled in the Fish Kids program gathered in the Salmon Brook Ecology Center to welcome 150 brown trout. The trout arrived in the back of a CT DEEP truck equipped with a cold-water holding tank with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

New way to help Granby libraries plus help your neighbors

The Friends Of The Granby Public Libraries have a new clothes donation shed, located behind the main library.  Donations can include any clothing, shoes, belts, purses, blankets, curtains and stuffed animals.  The Friends receive a portion of the proceeds, which support the Granby libraries.

What to read this Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving, I want to share two short reading recommendations that have long been part of my own Thanksgiving traditions: “Free Birds” by Michael P. Branch, and “Perhaps the World Ends Here” by former U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo.
