The Local Journalism Internship offers hands-on, real-world experience in print and digital journalism with the Drummer, Granby’s award-winning local newspaper.
Interns will join our writer’s room and production staff to work on original stories that will be published in the Drummer. In the six-week internship, interns will learn and develop skills in field reporting, in-person interviews, journalistic research, photography, print layout and design.
Additionally, interns will learn about the Granby community and the diverse range of voices represented in our town newspaper. The internship will conclude with a public event, where participating interns will present their work to the community along with the Drummer editor, writers and production staff.
The internship is supported by a generous grant from The Granby Community Fund, and it will take place during a six-week period in February and March 2027 (dates and schedule TBD). Applications are now open to any Granby resident age 16 or older, with at least two of the five internships designated for students at Granby Memorial High School.
Interns are encouraged to apply for first priority by Monday, Dec. 7. To apply, write to editor@granbydrummer.org with the subject line “Local Journalism Internship.” Please include a brief cover letter (no more than 300 words) telling us why you would like to join our writer’s room and production staff.
In particular, we are looking for interns with interest and/or experience in journalism, as well as those with interest and/or experience in production layout and design. We are also looking for anyone seeking a new challenge, a new set of skills, and an opportunity to learn more about our community with a team of experienced journalists and staff.
In your cover letter, please tell us how you align with at least one of the four core values of the local journalism internship:
1) Curiosity. The most important skill for a journalist is to remain curious. Every good journalist must continue to learn how to ask better questions and to seek better answers. Tell us about a time when you followed your curiosity.
2) Creativity. We value creative approaches and creative ideas in our writer’s room and our photography, and creativity is also valued in production design and layout. Tell us about your experience with creative or artistic work or your creative problem-solving skills.
3) Communication. Communication in all forms is essential to be a good journalist. We read and research, write and speak. Most importantly, we ask questions and we learn to hone and develop active listening skills. Give us an example of your communication skills and experience.
4) Collaboration. The Drummer is produced each month by a team ranging from our writers to our marketing and advertising staff, the layout and design staff and a host of volunteers who copy edit, proofread and fact check each issue before it goes to print. Tell us about how you have worked as a member of a team or about your experiences working in collaboration with others.
