To everyone in Granby, especially those I have had the pleasure to deliver to, it is with bittersweet emotions that I am announcing my retirement from UPS. I started driving for the company in 1988 and have been delivering in Granby for the past 24 years.

The newly established Special Education Committee of the Granby PTO donated buddy benches at Kelly Lane and Wells Road schools. The Frank M. Kearns School Study Committee, appointed by the Board of Selectman, is exploring future uses for the facility and surrounding property. This property is located in the southern part of town at 5 Canton Road and was formerly a Pre-K to grade 2 school. Haley Huelsman, 14, will once again be featured on hit TV show Dance Moms this upcoming winter. Huelsman was hand-selected for season 5 and season 5.5 of Dance Moms after appearing on Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition. The filming for season 7 of Dance Moms began in Los Angeles in September and Huelsman was selected to be a member of the Candy Apple’s Elite Teen team. You see, I’m part of a group of consumers that contributes approximately $7 million a year to projects throughout the state designed to conserve and enhance fish and wildlife populations and their habitats. These projects are funded through a program commonly known as the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program.
Celebrate Granby, held Sept. 20-22 in Salmon Brook Park and sponsored by the Granby Chamber of Commerce, featured booths promoting local businesses and non-profit organizations—and carnival rides that provided thrilling experiences for these youngsters.
The residents of the First District were very proud of their brand new school, which cost $828.44 to build. They voted to insure the new school against fire, to fix up the grounds and outbuildings, to buy all new furniture and to invite Professor Camp to speak at the opening day ceremony.
The district also appointed a committee to “devise the best method for protecting the new house against depredations committed by the scholars and children.” The committee produced the following rules:
“That if any wilful mutilation shall be committed by any person on any part of this house by scratch or cut of the length of 2 inches or under, shall pay a fine not exceeding 25 cents nor less than 6 cents.

Granby’s annual Open Farm Day, held Sept. 15, was a perfect opportunity to get up close with the farm animals in town. This youngster was captivated by the calves at House of Hayes.
The proposal for the Kearns Regional Community Center (which will cost the towns zero dollars and provide savings to Granby of $50,000 per year) continues to be well received. In the last month, the Steering Committee has started speaking publicly about the Community Center to churches, senior breakfasts, community dinners, councils on Aging, Celebrate Granby and people running for office in the region.
No matter who becomes our next governor or which party controls the legislature at the state capitol in Hartford, they will have their work cut out for them. While the bipartisan two-year state budget passed last year made some progress in helping to flatten the cost curve going forward, it is still the case that there are anticipated structural deficits of $2 billion and $2.6 billion respectively in the upcoming two fiscal years that will significantly test the mettle of state legislators and the executive branch.
Over the past several months, my husband Bill Regan and I have made written and oral comments, as well as commenting at public sessions, all directed to the Board of Selectmen relevant to various projects and their processes that impact the town’s economic and development future. The core of these comments and observations was to stimulate a marketing plan as recommended in Granby’s Plan of Conservation Development (POCD) instituted and submitted to the state in October 2016.
“The water is warm” were memorable words to us as we embarked on the journey of owning goats. It is time to acknowledge Granby 4H and all the families we have encountered during our journey with “barn life” and I figured a letter to the editor was the most appropriate venue.
Every fall, school districts receive the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) and SAT test scores and use them to measure both the previous year’s success and the long-term trends of their schools. Sadly, Granby did not fare well again.
