Asiatic Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus): Invasive of the month

Like the southern “kudzu” vine, Asiatic bittersweet spreads a drapery of death across thousands of acres in the northeast US. Bittersweet is an extremely vigorous woody vine that can grow 60 to 80 feet high, completely smothering small and medium sized trees and shrubs, wrapping tightly around and girdling trunks, covering and depriving leaves of light, weakening trees over time and often pulling them down.

Twenty-five years ago today, a great tragedy occurred in our country. A terrorist attack caused the loss of nearly 3,000 people. This event changed us as a country—we became united against the enemy who had done so much harm.

Teens attend First Responder Camp

Granby’s First Responder Camp is offered to teens entering 9th and 10th grade, providing them the hands-on experiences that first responders do on a daily basis. The August 2026 camp was the fourth “sell-out” camp and plans are underway for 2027 with bigger and better ideas.

The Digital Delusion: Essential reading for parents

We were told that giving our children laptops, tablets and educational software was progress. As Granby’s chapter leader for Mothers Against Media Addiction (MAMA), I’d like to recommend a book that challenges that assumption: The Digital Delusion: How Classroom Technology Harms Our Kids’ Learning—and How to Help Them Thrive Again by Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath.

Help us find you in an emergency

During an emergency it is important that emergency personnel quickly identify your house when responding. Finding your home, especially at night, is quite challenging if your street number is hidden, unreadable, unlit or missing entirely. This can delay responders from getting to your emergency quickly.

Little League baseball, a spring institution

Soon, the sounds of Little League baseball will be with us again. The infield on my team would chant in chorus, “Hey, batter, batter, batter, swing! Hey, batter, batter, batter, swing!” We were trying to entice the batter to swing at a bad pitch and get out. Granby Little League is about to begin its 73rd season, and that brings back fond memories of when I played.

Spring brings moss, flowers, salads

I always like to stop and smell the flowers, and I also pet moss. The texture provides a soothing tactile experience. Gazing at an expanse of moss-covered ground is calming as well—an emerald carpet so deeply green you might think of Ireland. Or, somewhat closer to home, the Hoh Rain Forest in the Pacific Northwest.
