Fall Fire Safety

On Sunday, Nov. 1, daylight savings time will end at 2 a.m., and we will all be setting our clocks back one hour. During this time of year, it’s a good reminder to replace the batteries in smoke alarms—Change Your Clock / Change Your Batteries. It is also a good time to check the age of smoke alarms. The life expectancy of smoke alarms is 10 years. If you are unsure as to the age of your smoke alarms, it would be a good idea to replace the unit.

It takes a village and a big heart

John O’Brien began his life in a rough neighborhood of Paterson, N.J. but has found a much more peaceful existence at Stony Hill Village in Granby center. O’Brien moved to New England when he accepted a transfer with a company where he was employed as a warehouse supervisor.

PFLAG to hold memorial ceremony

An observance for the Transgender Day of Remembrance will be offered to the community by PFLAG Granby on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. at the North Campus of Granby Congregational Church, 219 North Granby Road.

The Granby Durable Medical Equipment Closet is neighborly

On the Holcomb Farm property at 113 Simsbury Road, West Granby, lives the Granby Durable Medical Equipment Closet. Okay, in fairness, it’s a little closer to a garage than a closet—but not quite a barn despite its location. At the end of October, on Halloween no less, we celebrate 14 years of neighbors helping neighbors by donating the equipment they no longer need.

McLean Game Refuge gets new bench

As part of its commitment to the community, the Simsbury-Granby Rotary Club is honored to support the McLean Game Refuge by donating a new bench at the Route 10 entrance to one of Granby’s most cherished natural resources.

What’s for dinner?

Many Granby families will serve turkey with all the trimmings on Nov. 26, but not all. The Drummer would like to see how your “Turkey Day” spread looks so please send in a photo. If you’d like, also send along a recipe for your favorite side dish or dessert.

Kestrels are heading south this month

Along with so many of New England’s songbirds, kestrels are mostly heading south to escape the cold temperatures and diminishing food supply. The smallest of the falcons, Falco spaverius, is unlike most of the other falcons in that instead of seizing their prey in mid-flight, they hover above it and dive to the ground to capture their insect and small rodent meals.

When do YOU start holiday shopping?

Some people start their holiday shopping during the January sales. The other extreme are those folks who haunt the stores on Christmas Eve.
Here at the Drummer we encourage Granby-ites to shop early (and often) at local businesses that offer lovely, interesting, fun, adventurous, tasty and healthy options!

Christmas Poinsettias

Contrary to common myth, poinsettias are not lethal to cats and dogs but the sap can cause eye or skin irritation. Eating parts of the plant can cause drooling, lip-licking and mild intestinal issues.
Even though the plant is only mildly irritating, the ASPCA and other animal advocates recommend keeping poinsettias out of reach of pets.

Prepare for winter

Winter weather changes how we all get around, including how mail is delivered to every address in Granby and surrounding towns. A few simple steps can help keep customers and Postal Service employees safe during ice and snow.
