John O’Brien’s different take on Open Farm Day

The traditional purpose of the Granby Agricultural Commission’s Open Farm Day is to showcase the variety of farms that are found in our town, highlight their products and/or services and perhaps garner some income from sales. While one might be tempted to think that John O’Brien would approach the day with a thought to selling lots of hosta, that is not the case at all.

Election Update

For the Presidential Election on Nov. 3, many new precautions are being implemented to ensure the safety of both poll workers and voters. If you come to the polls, plan for a long wait, be patient, wear a mask, and dress warmly—it will take lots of extra time to vote.

Balancing today with tomorrow

At its September meeting, all six members of the Board of Finance supported using the General Fund over the next few years to offset all or a portion of the projected Debt Service for the capital projects approved last year. The intent is to help flatten the rate of increase in the mill rate over the next few years.

Rise Against Hunger support appreciated

The First Congregational Church of Granby thanks everyone who contributed to the Rise Against Hunger meal packaging event that was scheduled for this past April. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement and eventual cancellation of this hands-on service project.

Cultured-meat research

If Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal care about animal welfare, they should support federal funding for cultured-meat research. For those who don’t know, cultured meat is grown from cells, without slaughtering nonhumans.

John Kissel is one of the few Republicans that have held on to a seat in the state senate for a number of years because he manages to reach and support a broad range of constituents in multiple towns.

A recent letter to the editor claims that the Connecticut Republican Assembly is a radical organization and cites its thirteen principles as concerning. I had never heard of this organization so I checked into it.

Great fall weather for church fundraiser

First Church of Granby held a fundraiser on Oct. 10 to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, selling scarves and whoopie pies on a perfect autumn day. Sophie Riggott (l.) and Samantha Bordonaro, both of North Granby, were among the supporters.

Stop & Shop donates to Waste Not Want Not

Restore, Stop & Shop’s reduced emissions fuel program, has donated $10,000 grants to five hunger relief organizations. Granby’s Waste Not Want Not Food Pantry is one of the five organizations receiving the donation.

Migliaccio shared opening remarks saying that there have been tremendous resources devoted to the safe reopening of the schools. Thank you to custodians, secretaries, teaching assistants, nurses, and Central Services’ staff who have performed the impossible.
