At its annual meeting on Oct. 22, the Granby Land Trust bestowed its highest honor—the Mary Edwards Friend of the Land Trust Award—on Charlie and Joan Katan of West Granby. Charlie, a geologist by training and a naturalist by inclination, was a founder of the GLT. Foxfield For A Recovery Mission charity was established in April 2016 to provide an Equine Groundwork Therapy program for Veterans with PTSD. This is the fifth year that the Granby Lions have checked the eyesight of young children in Granby. Of the 728 children the Lions checked in October, 40 needed to see an eye doctor. This percentage of referrals improved this year. Debbie Brewer of West Granby and her horse, Baltimore, were recently awarded the Connecticut Dressage Association Championship Ribbon for Overall High Point Score during the 2018 season.
Debbie returned to competition in 2018 after suffering a serious riding accident in 2015. Her injuries prevented her from riding for over a year, but once she was back in the saddle she made steady progress and was ready to compete in shows again in 2018.

The Connecticut Council of Small Towns (COST) is urging lawmakers to oppose bills that would force the consolidation of smaller school districts, including SB-457, which requires school districts serving less than 2,000 students to consolidate with larger school districts, and SB-454, which requires schools to be consolidated into mega districts serving 40,000 students. “Consolidation does not always produce cost savings.
The Boards of Selectmen and Education presented their Plus-One Budgets to the Board of Finance and town residents at the annual Three-Board Meeting held on Jan. 22.
On March 6, I will present the FY20 Administrative Budget to the Board of Education. The budget is a spending plan that is responsive to the needs of the district, a Board of Finance budget guideline of 4 percent, a huge State budget deficit, and a proposed Governor’s budget that reduces $254K in State educational funding to Granby.
Over the years, in response to the significant economic challenges, the district has taken steps to reduce its budget by realizing line-item efficiencies and closing a school.
