YMCA Summer Programs

Summer at the YMCA is a favorite time of year. It’s a season filled with sunshine, laughter, new friendships and opportunities for families to come together and make lasting memories. From outdoor fitness classes and summer camp to water safety education and community events, there is something for everyone at the Y this summer.

Salmon Brook Historical Society grant program is now open

For 81 years, the Salmon Brook Historical Society has been preserving and celebrating the rich history of Granby, while educating the public about the importance of protecting the town’s historic buildings, landmarks and cultural heritage for future generations. At its recent Annual Meeting, SBHS President Howard Berg announced an exciting initiative by the Board of Directors to preserve Granby’s historic character for future generations.

Spring migration brings spectacular birdwatching

On the Granby Land Trust’s annual Mother’s Day Bird Walk, which took place at the Dismal Brook Wildlife Preserve in North Granby, participants spotted an incredible 52 species of birds over the course of two hours, with especially fine views of rose-breasted grosbeak, kingfisher, black-throated blue warbler (always a crowd pleaser), wood thrush, spotted sandpiper, great blue heron, common yellowthroat and Virginia rail.

The case of the missing fireflies

One of the joys of summer, no matter what one’s age, used to be watching the fireflies flitting about one’s back yard during the evenings of early summer. What child hasn’t trapped a few in a glass jar and kept them in the bedroom for the night? That is beginning to feel like a bygone pleasure, as it is becoming hard to find them anymore.

DPW Open House

Granby’s Department of Public Works hosted an Open House on May 16, and was joined by the Granby Lions providing a free shred service.

GAA Meet the artist event

GAA and the Granby-Simsbury Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored a reception on March 9 for GAA’s Simsbury Public Library Art Exhibition. More than 90 people enjoyed refreshments and viewed the many works on display by GAA exhibiting members. The next GAA exhibition will be the annual All Members Show at the East Granby Public Library in June.

From Read Across America to Read Across Granby

In celebration of Read Across America Week, members of the National English Honor Society from Granby Memorial High School paid a special visit to Kelly Lane Primary and Wells Road Intermediate schools, spending time reading with elementary students and sharing their love for reading.

Stony Hill cleanup day is May 9

Community Serve Day at Stony Hill Village will be Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at 259 Salmon Brook Street. Stony Hill is a senior living community managed by the nonprofit Granby Homes for Senior Citizens. Volunteers will work together by helping improve living spaces and outdoor areas.

Nathan Griswold, of Granby, was named to the fall dean’s list at Western New England University.
Luke Bilodeau, of East Granby, graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison, College of Letters and Science, with a B.A. economics.

Chamber Golf Classic is May 15

Friday, May 15 is the date for this year’s Granby-Simsbury Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic, to be held at Simsbury Farms. Cost for players is $150, which includes golf, breakfast, barbecue lunch, drink tickets, beer keg, raffle, auction and driving range.
