It started with working in the fields; Brittany Gauthier’s experience at Holcomb Farm

Farmington native Brittany Gauthier wanted to experience what it would be like to work on a farm, to be directly involved with the food she ate. A history of farming on her mother’s side of the family and her early career as an educator for Whole Foods Market had given rise to this curiosity, although it took her a few years to actually get her hands in the soil.

Garden-Variety Invasive Plants

Many of the state’s most serious invasive plants appear in home gardens as well as the open areas they rapidly dominate. Garlic mustard, multiflora rose, Asiatic bittersweet, Japanese barberry, Japanese knotweed and mugwort pop up and should be pulled by the roots when young.

This month I am going to share one of my favorite recipes—it’s not exactly a typical “dinner,” but if you have ever had just chips and salsa for dinner or you just want to be a hit at the next party, then this one is for you.

We all remember participating in fire drills in elementary school. Interrupting the lesson, the alarm would blare, and teachers lined up all the students, leading them out to the parking lot or field. While this was an important drill in case of emergency, I always remember the relief from students and frustration from teachers as a lesson was missed.

Sylvia Davis Fine Arts Scholarship award

It was a banner year for the Fine Arts Charity that was established in 2017 in memory of Sylvia Davis Patricelli. She was an internationally recognized portrait painter who lived with her husband and daughter in Granby for four years after leaving her home country of Australia.

Air Museum expands hours and offerings

In a sign that things are starting to get back to normal in the museum world, the New England Air Museum has announced an expansion of its hours to accommodate more visitors while enabling them to maintain a comfortable distance from others. The new hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the museum will be open every day from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
