The Bruce Porter Memorial Music Series was founded in 2011 to honor the life and work of Bruce Porter. Porter was a Granby native whose contributions as organist, choir director and music director of South Congregational Church included hosting classical music recitals at the church.
The graduation ceremony for Granby Memorial High School is scheduled for June 11, and Granby Parents for a Safe Graduation (GPSG) is kicking into high gear. GPSG is an all-volunteer, non-profit group that organizes a substance-free Safe Grad celebration for GMHS graduates at the Farmington Valley YMCA on graduation night.

Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Litchfield County is seeking volunteers to support its growing Hospice Program. Volunteers provide care to patients in towns throughout Litchfield County and the Farmington Valley, including Granby, East Granby and East Hartland.
February is Heart Health Month and at the Farmington Valley YMCA, it is also a time to reflect on community, impact and the power of movement to change lives. Throughout the month, the Y will highlight opportunities for people of all ages to come together, improve their health and support programs that strengthen our community.

In December, Kelly Lane, Wells Road and Granby Memorial Middle schools partnered in a toy drive benefiting Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC). Together, the schools collected an impressive 413 toys and craft items to support children receiving medical care at the hospital.
Granby Memorial boys basketball hosted The Hills vs. The Valley holiday in-season tournament, losing 41-44 in the finals vs. Lakeview on Dec. 30. Halfway through the season the Granby boys are currently at 10-1.

Granby Memorial High School fields several competitive teams during the CIAC winter sports season, including boys and girls basketball, wrestling, ice hockey, swimming and indoor track. Competing in the North Central Connecticut Conference (NCCC) as well as statewide CIAC competitions, GMHS student-athletes continue to represent the Bears with strong sportsmanship and outstanding community support.

It is with great excitement that Kelly Lane School welcomes its new principal, Kim Loveland, who joined the school this fall. Stepping into her 11th year as an elementary principal, she brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to fostering a supportive and thriving school community.
I hope you try this recipe while the farmstands are full of produce. While visiting my husband’s cousin in Italy in August, she served us the most delicious caponata as an appetizer. There are lots of variations but this recipe is closest to the one we had. Enjoy!

Two food drives held this summer at the Granby Stop & Shop benefited both the Granby and Hartland Food Banks, which work together to share resources to feed the hungry.

Fifty-seven years ago, a group of dedicated Granby volunteers created a unique youth organization. The vision of those ambitious residents became Marquis of Granby Ancient Fyfe and Drum Corps.
Troop 76 B (boys) and Troop 76 G (girls) are linked Scouts BSA troops in Simsbury, drawing members across the Farmington Valley including Granby, Avon and Canton. Anyone interested in joining a troop focused on scout-led leadership, personal growth and outdoor adventure are invited to join.
Anne McSwain, of Granby, was named to the dean’s list at Smith College for the 2024-25 school year.
Leon Totten V, of Granby, was named to the dean’s list at the University of North Dakota for the spring semester.
Kiley Schneider and Maureen VonHassel, both of Granby, graduated from Fairfield University in May.
Andrew LaCroix was named to the dean’s list at Boston University’s College of Engineering for the spring semester.

Turnout for early voting in Connecticut started a bit slowly with the primaries in April and August of 2024, according to the Office of Registrars in Granby, but turnout took off for the presidential election, with a surprising almost 50 percent of residents voting ahead of Nov. 5 last year.
Early voting is held at Granby Town Hall, Monday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. There are extended hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28 and Thursday, Oct. 30.
