Lifelong Learning

Bloom Where Planted

Roots in the Garden: Monday, July 7, 10 a.m. Explore different garden vegetables that actually grow under the ground. We will discuss how they grow, how to plant and how to harvest some common root vegetables. Leave with planted root veggie seeds to keep growing at home. Free.

Pressed Flower Suncatchers: Monday, Aug. 3, 10 a.m. Learn to press the perfect flower using a flower press or even a heavy book. We’ll explore some tips and tricks on making fresh flowers from the garden last as pressed flowers and create some beautiful sun catchers to hang in a window using already pressed flowers. Free.

Staying Steady

Preventing Falls and Promoting Independence Masterclass: Thursday, Aug. 13, 10 a.m. This engaging master class is designed for community members, caregivers and families to better
understand why falls happen and how to prevent them before they occur. This interactive session focuses on recognizing early warning signs of decline, improving safety awareness, promoting safe independence, and understanding when therapy intervention is needed. Participants will leave with practical strategies they can immediately implement to reduce fall risk, improve confidence with mobility, and support residents in maintaining their highest level of function and quality of life. Presented by Occupational Therapist Whitney Burns. Free.

Positional Vertigo: Friday, Aug. 28, 10 a.m. Join Jennifer Ashman, DPT, for a presentation on Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), a common inner ear condition that can cause dizziness and imbalance. In this 30-minute session, you will learn what BPPV is, its typical causes, how it is evaluated and treated, and where to seek care for complete symptom relief. Free.

Red, White and Bingo: Friday, Aug. 21, 10 a.m. MATT on the GO! (Mattatuck Museum). Celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a game that combines the exciting elements of trivia and bingo. Participants will be challenged to listen and answer questions for clues about American history, culture, landmarks and famous figures while marking their cards. From the Revolutionary era to modern milestones, every round brings a chance to showcase your patriotic knowledge while competing to get a bingo. This engaging program blends friendly competition, patriotism and fascinating facts as we commemorate 250 years of American history. Free.

Shopping, Windsor Shops: Wednesday, July 1, depart 9 a.m. Cost $5.

Shopping, Stew Leonard’s: Monday, Aug. 10, depart 9 a.m. Cost $5.

Foxwoods: Monday, July 1, depart 8:30 a.m. Beat the heat and turn up the fun! Try your luck at the slots, hunt for amazing deals at the outlets or make it the perfect day by doing a little bit of both. Plenty of different lunch options. Cost $10.

Sacred Heart University’s Science Center and Planetarium: Thursday, July 30, depart 9:45 a.m. Enjoy the planetarium show, Tour of the Solar System. Join educators for a tour of Earth’s nearest neighbors. From planets and dwarf planets to moons and more, you’ll see some of the major bodies in our solar system and learn about how our understanding of our place in the universe develops with each new discovery. You will also have time to enjoy the exhibits and demos. Cost $25.

Thimble Island: Wednesday, Aug. 19, depart 9 a.m. The Thimble Islands are a chain of 365 islands in Stony Creek Harbor off the southeast coast of Branford in Long Island Sound. Take a 45- minute tour of the islands aboard the Sea Mist. Lunch on your own at The Dockside Restaurant. Cost $30.

Ongoing Programs

New and improved Lunch Program: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12–1 p.m. The lunch program offers a healthy, low-cost lunch for seniors prepared and cooked at the center with the opportunity to get out and meet new people. Monthly menus are available at the Senior Center. At this time, we are unable to accommodate special dietary restrictions. Reservations are required and accepted until noon Friday for the following week by calling 860-844-5352. Cost $5 per meal.

Walking Group: Friday, Aug. 7 at 10 a.m. Free. No July group.

COA Coffee Hour: Will resume in September.
