Dear Santa:
Last time I wrote, we were nearing the end of 2020. And, oh my, what a year that was: impeachment proceedings, a global pandemic, Brexit. You must have had your hands full with the annual naughty-nice list. I hope the brownie toffee cookies we left for you provided at least some solace.

One of the Friends’ strategic goals is to “grow the growing season,” and in New England that means greenhouses aka hoophouses. In February 2019, Mother Nature decided to challenge that goal with 70 mph winds, which took down what was then our beloved Greenhouse #6 (GH6), home to our best chemical-free spinach.
Although she wasn’t born here, Holcomb Farm employee Michelle Dingivan’s childhood memories were set in Granby, for she was only three years old when her family moved here from Hluboka, Czechia. Woozy is a tricky word. We use it to describe many symptoms, such as light-headedness, weakness, confusion, instability, maybe even nausea, and feeling like a faint will occur.
Carol Anne Marquardt Laun—world traveler, avid cyclist, talented writer, much-respected historian of Granby, and beloved wife, mother, and grandmother—passed away on June 20, 2021, at the age of 87. She faced the end of her journey, after a recurrence of ovarian cancer, with the same courage, grace and organizational skill that she brought to everything else in her life.
There has always been a lot to like about Clark Farms at Bushy Hill Orchard, what with the blueberry and apple-picking, the cider donuts, the fresh veggies, honey and a now a new chef with some very progressive ideas about breakfast and other meals, but the newest addition has added an exciting element: a great bar serving hard cider!
The Granby Memorial High School class of 2020 had its senior year cut short as the pandemic first surged in March, now over a year-and-a-half ago. Much of that class are now entering sophomore year of college, having started freshman year at the height of the pandemic in the fall of 2020.
It turns out that tobacco farming in Granby is successful: During the month of August, a third tobacco barn was added to the Coward Farm on North Granby Road (formerly Dr. Davis’s cow farm). The above photo was taken during its construction.

The moon blocked part of the sun in a sunrise solar eclipse on June 10 in North Granby. The phenomenon appeared as a “ring of fire” to some observers in Canada and Northern Europe. On the East Coast of North America, it appeared more like a crescent moon—or a smile.
