Social Services — September 2024

The focus of the Social Services Department is to coordinate existing federal, state, regional and local services, to increase community awareness of these services and to develop new programs to meet the needs of Granby residents.

Local theater seeks new members

Granby’s own local community theater since 2010, Good Company Theater, has produced and supported a number of successful theatrical productions over the years. With recent hits such as Murder by Indecision, Deadly Trust Fall and The One-Act Play that Goes Wrong, the group has been a pillar of the local art scene and has provided a vital space for community members to come together.

Race, Religion and Politics workshops offered

The free, well-received Race, Religion, and Politics series will conclude this autumn. Prior participation is not required to join the upcoming workshops. Dr. Matthew Hughey, professor of sociology at the University of Connecticut and prolific author is returning to facilitate on the following two dates:

As the vibrant hues of autumn begin to paint Granby, the Farmington Valley YMCA is gearing up for a season filled with dynamic programs and events designed for the whole family. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store this fall:

New president for Rotary Club

Alma Kruh is the new President of the Simsbury-Granby Rotary Club for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. Kruh has been a proud and active Rotarian for 28 years.

Local woman makes history on Nantucket

When she was growing up on Nantucket, Granby resident Catherine Slattery learned that being a girl had some disadvantages. She couldn’t work at or go to the Caddy Camp at the island golf club. “Boys Only” was the rule. That was always in the back of her mind, and, many years later, when she became one of the owners of the island’s Madaket Marine, she was determined to start a Captain’s camp for young women. Not only would this even the long-ago score, it would increase the talent pool from which she could draw staffing for the marina.

It’s going to be a walk in the Park!

The Town of Granby has received a $453,000 grant for the installation of a pedestrian-friendly walking path along the perimeter of Salmon Brook Park.
In 2018, the Town constructed a sidewalk along Route 10/202 that continued a bit into the park. Fast forward a few years and the Parks and Recreation Board began thinking about extending the sidewalk.

Keep a school trip alive

For years, the eighth grade Washington, D.C. trip was a rite of passage for Granby Memorial Middle School students. For many, it was the first time away from home and the first time visiting our nation’s capital. Many alumni have fond memories of trips to Washington, D.C, and still have the souvenir picture that each student received of their class on the U.S. Capitol steps.

Class of 1972 celebrates 50 years

As Bob waited in the check-out line at Stop and Shop, he heard a voice call out, “Mr. Bazyk”. While the man’s voice sounded vaguely familiar, it wasn’t until he turned around and saw his high school friend Charlie Ray that the flood of memories rushed back.

As we go into the holiday season, there are many things to remember, prepare and do. No wonder we often start to doubt ourselves when we can’t find something or forget an appointment or special day. If we have had relatives with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, we start to be concerned.

The Manitook Hotel was Granby’s “in place”

From 1929 to 1935, the Manitook Hotel, and guest cottages on the west shore of the lake, was a thriving, bustling place. Tourists from New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and many other states visited to canoe, swim, play tennis, fish, hunt, and enjoy a vacation in Granby.

Absentee Ballots available

An important change in the wording and interpretation of the state statute has given all registered voters who are concerned about the pandemic, the option to obtain and fill out an absentee ballot application, vote absentee, and use the black Official Ballot Drop Box located in front of Town Hall for completed applications and ballots.
