School ended for the summer around June 28 and wouldn’t start again until the Wednesday after Labor Day. I was looking forward to a long relaxing summer. Our teacher Mr. Bing said we could take home up to ten books from the bookshelves. I took ten thick novels and walked home balancing them in my arms.

Since 1956, the scenic pond on Wells Road has been open to the public for fishing, picnicking, bird-watching and assorted social gatherings thanks to the generosity of Allen and Carol Christensen, who own the property. The pond has never had an identifying sign, until now.

Students from the GMMS Fish Kids club recently took part in a fun field trip designed to bring environmental science lessons out of the classroom and into the field through hands-on learning.
A seasonal reading moment that stands out to me each year is when I can finally take my book outside and settle into the plush, green grass. I no longer need a sweater for a walk. It’s the first time I can read outdoors comfortably again.

Weed is a catchall term, imprecise and subjective—plants growing where they’re not wanted! Lots of weeds are annoying but controllable without chemicals. Others are maddening—no matter what we do, they come back and back and back. Some of the worst are truly invasive—on the state Invasive Plants list.

Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Litchfield County is seeking volunteers to support its growing Hospice Program. Volunteers provide care to patients in towns throughout Litchfield County and the Farmington Valley, including Granby, East Granby and East Hartland.
February is Heart Health Month and at the Farmington Valley YMCA, it is also a time to reflect on community, impact and the power of movement to change lives. Throughout the month, the Y will highlight opportunities for people of all ages to come together, improve their health and support programs that strengthen our community.

In December, Kelly Lane, Wells Road and Granby Memorial Middle schools partnered in a toy drive benefiting Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC). Together, the schools collected an impressive 413 toys and craft items to support children receiving medical care at the hospital.
Granby Memorial boys basketball hosted The Hills vs. The Valley holiday in-season tournament, losing 41-44 in the finals vs. Lakeview on Dec. 30. Halfway through the season the Granby boys are currently at 10-1.

Granby Memorial High School fields several competitive teams during the CIAC winter sports season, including boys and girls basketball, wrestling, ice hockey, swimming and indoor track. Competing in the North Central Connecticut Conference (NCCC) as well as statewide CIAC competitions, GMHS student-athletes continue to represent the Bears with strong sportsmanship and outstanding community support.

This is the story of high school sweethearts, Priscilla and Jimmy, who met in his junior year and her sophomore year, at Hartford Public High School. A mutual friend set up a blind date to go to a drive-in movie in 1968. They continued to go out for the next five years and were married on June 9, 1973. We bought a house in Granby in December 1973, where I still live today!

Eighteen hardy souls braved 18-degree weather to enjoy the 18th Annual GLT New Year’s Day Hike at the snowy and beautiful Mary Edwards Mountain Property in North Granby. A big thank you to Hike Leader Fran Armentano, who has made this a special way to start the New Year for so many years!

Celebrating its 25th year during 2026, the Granby Artists Association has initiated a community arts project, Seasons of the Granby Oak. The GAA invites everyone to join a diverse study of the Granby Oak as part of nature and home to animal and plant life. The Granby Oak is an inspiration to all mediums and styles of art.
The Granby Grange welcomed Connecticut State Grange Deputy Patrick O’Brien to its Dec. 14 meeting and included a special moment of fellowship as Life Member Nancy Silkey was formally welcomed into Granby Grange.
