Should I buy an electric car? This question has been on my mind for the last year or so, and I’d like to share what I’ve learned about the many pros and cons of owning an electric vehicle (EV).

Friends of the libraries merge

There is a new non-profit in town. The newly created Friends of the Granby Public Libraries, Inc. came into being in January to combine the strengths of the Friends of Granby Public Library and the Friends of F.H. Cossitt Library with the mission of supporting the Granby Public Library System. This merger, which took years to complete, was a team effort between the groups with help from Pro Bono Partnership lawyers, the library director and with the support of the Library Board.

Reflections on a Civil Rights bus tour

On the national holiday celebrating the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr., Granby Racial Reconciliation (GRR) sponsored a Civil Rights bus tour virtual panel discussion. The panel consisted of Granby residents, Ken and Rose Mouning, Pastor Clark Pfaff and Ellen Thomson who participated in the tour this past summer.

The birth of Granby Congregational Church, UCC

There was great excitement as members from First Congregational Church and South Congregational Church gathered on Jan. 8 to celebrate the official creation of Granby Congregational Church, UCC, with a party complete with cake and balloons.

West Granby resident awarded DAR Veteran Volunteer Award

At its November Awards meeting the Abigail Phelps Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented the Veteran Volunteer Award to Leesa Philippon of West Granby in recognition of her distinguished military service to our country, outstanding citizenship, and community service.

Remembering Tom Wutka—a man of many talents

Most Granby folks today remember Tom Wutka sitting on the porch at Lost Acres Orchard, peeling his apples for the many delectable ways they would be used in the family bakery, including his own specialty, Tom’s Dried Apples. Perhaps, especially if they had children, those same folks would remember him driving the tractor that pulled the wagon filled with sightseers for a trip through the orchard on Open Farm Day. Those memories will have to do, for sadly Tom passed away early in December.

Based on the fact that the education department of any town or city makes up a majority of that municipality’s annual budget, it is important to be educated on its status, both fiscally and operationally. This has been particularly true with the challenges of COVID-19 while educating our youth and maintaining safety for parents, students, teachers, institutional staff and external support such as transportation service workers.

CSAG announces scholarships

The Community Scholarship Association of Granby (CSAG) offers annual scholarships to graduating Granby Memorial High School seniors. Applicants must be Granby residents who are soon-to-be graduates that have been accepted at an institution of higher learning approved by the selection committee.

Joanna Jerin 1946-2021

On Jan. 26, Joanna Jerin, loving wife, mom, friend, and Mimi left this life at the age of 74. Joanna was born on Nov. 4, 1946, to Lawrence and Jennie (Comparone) Schermerhorn in Bristol.

Whether family members, relatives, friends or neighbors, most of us know someone who wore or continues to proudly wear the uniform of one of the five military branches—six with Space Force, of the U.S. Armed Forces. Spanning the decades, men and women have heroically and honorably served our country, with too many sadly encountering casualties leading to disability, or loss of life—the highest sacrifice of all.

Last month I discussed two native Granby residents, Harry Wilcox and William Case as having served in the Spanish-American War in 1898. They were born in Granby, but lived outside of Granby after the war.

Winged Euonymus / Burning Bush Euonymus alatus

A colorful, apparently innocuous shrub that can grow over 10 or 15 feet tall, the winged euonymus displays wild fall color ranging from light pink to fire red. In March, before leaves sprout, it’s easily identified by unusual “wings” on side branches.

Men’s Breakfast e-Group

At the next Granby Men’s Breakfast e-Group on Friday, March 12, the guest speaker will be Dale Picard, co-founder of Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities (ECAD). Well, 2021 is off to an interesting start—instead of going to Florida as I had planned at the beginning of February—I decided to fall down a step and go to the ER. No broken bones, but some messed up tendons and muscles in my leg.
