The Seniors Job Bank has chosen a leadership team to guide the non-profit into its 42nd year. The officers are President Bernie Weiss, of West Hartford, Vice President Gail Crockett, also from West Hartford, Treasurer Del Shilkret, of Granby, and Secretary Jennifer Wolfberg, of Avon.
The Board of Directors includes Bob Calef and Delores Wisdom, both from Bloomfield, as well as David Pena, of Avon, Hank Boulton, of Hartford, Lisa Larsen, of West Granby, Anne Danaher, of West Simsbury, and Bob Cave, Jim Doran, Al Nweeia, Bill Pickens, Novlette Williams, Elaine Thomas Williams, and Dina Plapler, all West Hartford residents. The officers and directors serve as unpaid volunteers.
The Seniors Job Bank connects people over 50 years of age seeking work, with businesses, public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and households that have work to be done. SJB maintains a registry of approximately 400 job seekers, representing about 100 discrete skills, talents and abilities. When a client, a company or homeowner with an opening calls, SJB provides the employer contact information for several of its registrants who may be qualified for the position. The employer evaluates the candidates, and upon selecting one, negotiates the terms of the assignment—such as duties, hours, compensation—with the candidate.
Supported by philanthropic grants and donations from individuals, the Seniors Job Bank is free for job seekers and clients to use; there are no fees for its service.
Many jobs arranged through the Seniors Job Bank are part-time, temporary or single projects, but others are longer term or result in repeat engagements.
Commercial and professional firms commonly turn to SJB when they have openings for office administrators, bookkeepers and receptionists, among many other tasks. Residential clients often use SJB to locate gardeners, companions, pet sitters and workers to handle repair and maintenance projects.
While the Seniors Job Bank’s headquarters is in West Hartford’s town hall, the community resource is available to job seekers and clients throughout the Hartford metropolitan region. “The Covid crisis has caused our executive director Sheila Diamond and her staff to operate from their homes, but they’ve kept us going with hardly a hiccup,” said Weiss, SJB president. “Our clients, commercial and domestic, and our job seekers have been accommodated despite the personal and economic upheaval of this most stressful year,” he added.
