In the last issue of the Drummer, I wrote about Granby’s Civil War hero, Colonel Richard E. Holcomb, who died in battle at Port Hudson, Louisiana. When Holcomb’s body was returned to Granby for burial, many of his things were sent back in his trunk, such as his canteen, his uniform, with all the shoulder boards of his rank as Lieutenant, then Major, and finally Colonel.

Lost Acres Vineyard owner, Michelle Niedermeyer, honored Granby artist Laura Eden during a May reception unveiling the Vineyard’s new wine bottle labels.
At the GLT’s annual Mother’s Day Bird Walks, participants identified —either by sight or sound — nearly 60 species of birds, including a Virginia rail, a pair of scarlet tanagers, and, for the first time ever at Dismal Brook, a loon!

More than 125 Granby Land Trust (GLT) volunteers fanned out across Granby over the course of Earth Day Weekend, picking up more than 1.61 tons of roadside trash from 52 miles of road – and several parking lots – as part of the GLT’s Earth Day Roadside Cleanup. That is nearly double the amount of trash collected in last year’s cleanup.

The Granby Memorial High School varsity boys lacrosse team is 14-0 for the season at press time. They are at least tied for the NCCC conference championship.

Many of my favorite childhood memories involve fishing. It’s what I did to escape the daily turmoil of growing up in our tumultuous, single-parent household. I never caught a single fish worth bragging about. But fishing was safe.
On May 7, the Granby Road Race ran for the 51st time. While organizers prepared all week for wet weather, they were surprised to see nary a drop of rain. The wind on the other hand posed a bit of a challenge. Nonetheless, the runners pushed through and had a great race.
In June, South Church will say a tearful farewell to senior minister Denny Moon, who is retiring, and to associate minister Sandra Fischer, who is moving on to the next stage in her ministerial career.

The Salmon Brook Historical Society will share in Granby’s Juneteenth celebration with information about Black residents who lived here as early as the 1700s.
The Granby Memorial Track and Field teams are in the process of completing a grueling six-meet schedule. The boys’ team is currently 8-3 while the girls are currently 5-6.
Hazardous Waste: a household hazardous waste collection will be held Saturday, June 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Simsbury DPW facility, 66 Town Forest Road, Simsbury.

The collection of all donations for the Friends of Granby Public Library’s sale will ONLY take place at Holcomb Farm on Mondays and Wednesdays in June. Book sale donations will not be accepted at the library.
As you talk to your neighbors about their gardens this summer, don’t be surprised if a number of them say they got their start at the Friends’ May Plant sales.

On Earth Day, April 22, the Friends of Holcomb Farm formally dedicated the Tree Trail Kiosk, made possible through a donation from the Granby Lions Club.

I say it simply—unashamed and unabashed—I love this town.
After my operation, I was really depressed from a combination of pain and medication. I felt very alone and was so uncomfortable that I just lay crying in my hospital bed.
