Despire Title Nine, Gender Bias Remains

By |

CTVV: Despite Title Nine, gender bias remains Susan Regan, host of CT Valley Views had a very insightful interview recently with Sophie Brown, a 13-year-old 8th grader at Watkinson School in Hartford. The decision to have such a youthful guest on the show was inspired by the publication of her editorial submission entitled “I’m Not Just One of The Guys” to the Hartford Courant’s Fresh Talk section. Sophie and her mother, Alicia Brown shared their commentary regarding the subject of Sophie’s a […]

Poem by Bernadette

March How blessed we are to welcome this new month of March with its promise of spring days to come. We smile at the beauty of the daffodils, the bravery of the tiny crocuses, and at the sight of returning robins in a field, or on a lawn. Yes, the winter has taken its toll with illnesses, and house bound days off heavy snows, slippery ice, bitter cold, and chilling winds. Yet, now the sun renews us with its strength, and brings joy into our souls. Welcome, March, dear friend. The […]

Letter from John Kissel

Do you oppose border tolls? “Border tolls would raise a substantial amount of money for this state.” That’s what the co-chair of the state legislature’s Transportation Committee said recently. So brace yourselves, Granby Drummer readers. The issue of building border tolls has returned at the State Capitol. If built, the tolls could cost between $3 and $7 per car. This could all happen by 2017.  I oppose border tolls. A hearing on the proposal could be held in Hart […]

Letter from Bentley

I am delighted that the Drummer December 2014 issue included the article in remembrance of Fred Wilhelm, Sr., written by Trish Percival and Rick Orluk. The article noted that the family planted a gingko tree, in memory of Fred. We thank John O’Brien, O’Brien Nurserymen, for finding and procuring this sapling for us and for helping the family plant it properly. His expertise helps ensure that this living memorial will remind us of Fred for decades to come. Bill Bentley […]

George Tuffin I’m certain that many among us will eulogize George Tuffin. I’m one of them but am interested in emphasizing one not so evident thing that he did for Granby. Shortly after moving to Granby in 1960, George was elected by his neighbors to be Granby’s first unpaid first selectman under the town’s new charter. His selection may have been due in part to George seemingly knowing everyone in town and considering each of us his good friends. Being new to town a […]

Friends of Cossitt

Cossitt support The Friends of Cossitt Library wish to thank the thoughtful townspeople who donated to the Cossitt Book Gift Tree Project this past December. Fifty-eight seniors enjoyed receiving holiday gifts of books at the Granby Senior Center lunch, and 28 children from 9 months to 17 years received gift books through Granby Social Services. Numbers of donors gave multiple books. Granby again demonstrated the town’s generous spirit. The Friends also wish to thank the good cooks wh […]
