Local Girl Scout earns Gold Award

Mackenzie Janski has earned the highest award offered by Girl Scouts USA (GSUSA), the Girl Scout Gold Award. Mackenzie was recognized at her Gold Award Pinning Ceremony on Jan. 12, at Pilgrim Covenant Church. In recognition of her dedication and hard work to benefit all Granby citizens, the Granby Board of Selectmen presented a proclamation to Mackenzie on Jan. 6, and the State Legislature issued its own proclamation during the ceremony.

New initiative: School Resource Officer

In December, Granby Police Chief Scott Sansom and the Superintendent of Schools proposed that the board of education consider adding a School Resource Officer (SRO) to Granby Public Schools for the 2025-26 school year. An SRO is a sworn law enforcement officer who works full-time in a school setting to enhance the safety of students and staff.

GMHS dual enrollment journalism course

Granby Memorial High School and Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) are collaborating to create a new dual enrollment journalism course for high school students. This class offers a collegiate-level understanding of journalism by mirroring CCSU’s Journalism 200 course.

Volunteers needed for senior assistance program

The Granby Senior Center provides the Senior Van Medical Transport service for a $5 fee for Granby residents and $10 for non-residents, to receive a ride from home to medical appointments and back.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum theft revisited in new film

Mark Guiod, Granby resident and former Air Traffic Chief for the FAA at Bradley International Airport, has a new role — film producer. Through his son David’s post-film school connections, Guiod became a producer for a new independent feature film, Art Thief, that is making the rounds of film festivals across the country. The film will be screening Feb. 1 at the Cabot Theater in Beverly, Mass., and a local screening is also being planned.

Granby Racial Reconciliation brings race, religion and politics workshops to Granby

Granby Racial Reconciliation is hosting a series of four 1.5-hour workshops to discuss the intersection of race, religion and politics. The hope is that, in the year of a national election, these guided conversations will enable participants to better understand the dynamics of these social forces at work in our nation, enabling them to better participate in our democracy.

Granby Artists accepting scholarship applications

Graduating high school seniors who are permanent Granby residents are cordially invited to apply for the 2024 Granby Artist Association Annual Scholarship. The scholarship is a cash award of $1,000 given to a student of higher artistic skill to be utilized toward upcoming college expenses.

Civic organizations in town: The Freemasons of Granby

In the July/August Drummer edition, I wrote about how Granby was full of volunteers, mentioning many organizations such as the Granby Club, Bridge Club, and the Boy and Girl Scout chapters. One organization I overlooked was the Freemasons of Granby, a very early civic organization and the oldest fraternal organization in the world.
