New England’s Forgotten Farms

Forgotten Farms, a documentary about New England dairy farms, will be shown Sunday, March 11, at 2 p.m. in the Simsbury Public Library lower level program room. The Friends of Holcomb Farm partnered with the Granby and Simsbury land trusts to host this free event, which will explore the plight of struggling dairy farms that are becoming increasingly scarce in New England.

TIOSN presents: Soil, plant and human health effects of glyphosate

The Institute Of Sustainable Nutrition (TIOSN) is grateful for the unique opportunity to bring two world-class research scientists to Granby for a presentation on the effects of Roundup and it’s active ingredient, glyphosate. Dr. Don M. Huber, Professor Emeritus, Plant Pathology, Purdue University and Dr. Stephanie Seneff, Senior Research Scientist at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will discuss the soil, plant and human health effects of glyphosate.

Spring’s Journey

DTC Trivia Night raises funds for scholarships

Members and guests of the Granby Democratic Town Committee (DTC) gathered for fun, food and friendly competition at the second annual Trivia Game Night Out, an event that raises funds for Granby DTC college scholarship awards. The event was attended by more than 80 people this year.  Award levels have grown over the years with the first scholarship of $500 awarded in 2012 increasing to two $1000 scholarships in 2017.

Toni Boucher (R): Exploratory candidate for governor

Toni Boucher has been a member of the Connecticut Senate from the 26th District since January 2009 following six terms in the Connecticut House of Representatives. Senator Boucher is currently in an exploratory campaign run for the 2018 Connecticut Gubernatorial race that is crowded with approximately twelve other candidates on each side of the isle plus one independent who has already chosen a running mate.

Kindergarten registration begins

There are new procedures for registering kindergarten students. Beginning Feb. 1, parents must pre-register their child for kindergarten on the Kelly Lane Primary School page of the Granby Schools website: Granby.k12.ct.us

Lukingbeal honored for environmental service

Connecticut Woodlands, the publication of the Connecticut Forest and Parks Association (CPTA), recently recognized Eric Lukingbeal for his service to the organization. Lukingbeal served as president for the past eight years and has been a member since 1997.

Presidential visits to Granby

President Calvin Coolidge came to Granby in May of 1932 to go fishing with his good friend, Senator George McLean of Simsbury. Senator McLean owned a lot of land and cared about the environment.

Organic Gardening

The Gardeners of Simsbury will host Trade Secrets: Plant Selection and Organic Lawn Care with Karla Dalley on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Simsbury Public Library in the large meeting room from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Free to the public.

Women’s Breakfast

Eliza Floran will present “From Grassroots Ice Cream to Deep Roots Street Food in Granby” to the Granby Women’s Breakfast Group on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Senior Center.

Volunteers Needed

Mary’s Kitty Korner, Granby’s no-kill cat shelter, is looking for volunteers to help care for its kitties until they find “fur-ever” homes. Swedish Pancake Breakfast, Bake Sale

Pilgrim Covenant Church, 605 Salmon Brook St., will hold a Swedish pancake breakfast and Scandanavian bake sale on Saturday, March 7, 8–10 a.m. Come for pancakes, lingonberries, bacon, sausage and fellowship. Cost is a free-will donation; proceeds benefit an upcoming mission trip.

MS Support Group

VPS Tag Sale

The annual Valley Pre-School Sale tag sale is Saturday, March 28, 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at First Church, North Granby Road. Early Bird access to sales from 8 to 8:30 a.m. is $10.

SBHS Events

The Salmon Brook Historical Society has a big year ahead marking its 75th anniversary. Members encourage everyone to come celebrate with us at various events this year and, as always, tours are offered every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. starting Memorial Day.
