The full May and June calendars and the buzz of excitement from our students tells us that the end of the school year is approaching. The activities and enthusiasm of our students and staff are high energy right now as everyone is focusing on exciting end-of-year activities, spring sports, field trips, prom, concerts, senior outings and awards celebrations.
Half-way through the school year, Granby Memorial High School junior Ben Lavigne was appointed the second student representative to the Board of Selectmen, joining senior Chas Orluk in reporting scholastic and sports news from the school.
Call it ignorant, but I generally ignore the announcements that blare across the high school intercom system each morning. Ask any GMHS student, and they will likely attest to committing the same offense. However, one spring morning during my freshman year, with the sun gleaming across my desk and my mind clear from distractions, I turned my ear to the wave of advertisements and reminders spouting from the ceiling speakers.
Granby seniors Ben Weber and Nathan Griswold concluded their G-4s 4-H Robotics experience with a trip to the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas. Middle schoolers Dylan Hamilton and Emma Doherty assisted as pit crew.
Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and enjoy smooth tunes from the Wells Road Intermediate School, Granby Memo-rial Middle School and Granby Memorial High School jazz bands. This free event starts at 5 p.m. at the bandshell in Salmon Brook Park. Presented by the Granby Public Schools music department.
The countdown is on! Only two weeks remain until the event Granby Parents for a Safe Graduation (GSPG) has been planning all year! GSPG has been working hard to create a memorable evening to celebrate the Class of 2024.

Granby resident Jaira Paine paced the Endicott College Gulls Women’s Lacrosse team to a 17-9 victory in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship game May 4 over three-time defending champion and top-seeded Roger Williams.
The Granby Assessor’s Office has been preparing for the State Mandated Revaluation that is required every five years. The appraisal firm Vision Appraisal Technology has contracted with the Town of Granby to assist with its revaluation for Oct. 1. The company will be working with the Assessor’s office to make the 12- to 18-month process successful.
The Aquarion Water Company has announced the start of the 2022 mandatory sprinkler irrigation schedule for its customers in East Granby, Granby and Simsbury. The schedule helps to conserve water supplies by reducing overwatering of lawns and gardens.
The Granby Racial Reconciliation (GRR) Board of Directors would like to clarify a March 2022 Drummer article submitted by one of its task teams.
This past January, I had the misfortune of falling in my home early one evening. This was not my first fall at home and each occasion has resulted in a 911 call to secure assistance in getting back up.

As mask mandates decrease and we hear less discussion surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a false sense that all is well—for everyone.

Granby’s recently appointed Town Manager, Erica Robertson, wrote in the March edition of the Drummer: “My staff and I will have a road map for getting Granby to where we want to be in the future.” I understand that there has been some controversy on social media as to what was meant by Robertson’s statement.
The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) has announced the 2022 Connecticut Neighborhood Assistance Act Program Proposal. This program provides tax credits to businesses that make cash investments in qualifying community nonprofit programs.

April was an exciting month for the Granby Public Schools. Our students and staff continue to make the community proud of our school district.
On Nov. 10, 2021, Governor Ned Lamont and Connecticut Education Commissioner, Charlene Russell-Tucker, announced the launch of Voice4Change, an initiative designed to give high school students a voice in how American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief funds may be spent at their schools.

March 15 was a special day for Granby Memorial High School senior Elizabeth Squier as she signed her commitment letter to Eastern Connecticut State University. Elizabeth was admitted not only for her academic standing, but also for her considerable volleyball skills.
On Sunday, May 22, at 3:30 p.m., the Windy Hill Guitar Ensemble will present Limerick Lane, a concert of traditional folk music from Ireland and Scotland arranged for classical guitar, interspersed with limericks and jigs composed by the students.

Chase Alexander, a student at Granby Memorial High School, placed third in the Connecticut Press Club’s annual writing competition.The high school contest is run in conjunction with the Connecticut Press Club’s professional contest. The entries were judged by communications professionals who are members of the press club.
Falcetti School of Music and Playhouse Theatre Academy invite you to attend its Grand Opening Event, The Perfect Pair, at Simsmore Square in Simsbury in celebration of the new shared teaching facility.
