A sweet return for spring

After a cold, dark winter I look forward to spring when senses come alive again and there’s a delicious earthy fragrance in the woods. I find myself searching the hills for clouds of steam billowing from evaporators and envision myself surrounded by sweet-smelling maple steam inside warm, cozy sugar shacks.

Progress, in town and at home

It sometimes seems impossible to make even a dent against invasives, but a dedicated bunch of volunteers are making big progress in visible public places. Property lines mean nothing to invasive plants, so every step we take at home benefits our neighbors as well.

Spring Fire Safety

n March 10, we will set our clocks ahead by one hour to return to daylight savings time. This time change is a good reminder to replace the batteries in our smoke alarms. It is also a good time to check the age of your smoke alarms

Granby Grange #5 updates

It’s time for Irish soda bread

I have fond memories of my mom’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations—March 17th was a big holiday in my house! If it’s time for the wearin’ of the green, then it’s time for soda bread.

From the late 19th to the mid-20th century, culinary ephemera, including recipe booklets and appliance advertising pamphlets, were published by the US government, farmers’ organizations, and food companies. These were mostly mailed or given out free at grocery stores, and they serve as a historical record of the way we cooked and ate at the time.
