On July 16, Julien’s Farm Store hosted the Granby Horse Council (GHC) during its monthly meeting that was held at Valkyrie Equestrian Center. Carolyn Mainardi, Valkyrie’s owner, gave a tour to start off the evening. GHC members and guests walked through the stables, past the indoor and outdoor rings, and were introduced to equine residents along the way.
Connect with your local Granby artists at the annual Granby Artists Open Studio weekend on Oct. 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Open Studio tour invites visitors to artists’ studios to meet the artists, watch demonstrations and find art and gifts.
Cub Scout Pack 325 of Granby held its annual rocket launch on Aug. 9 at Salmon Brook Park, and the skies were buzzing with excitement as scouts and their families gathered for one of the pack’s most thrilling summer traditions.
Girl Scouts of Connecticut recently recognized 35 exceptional Girl Scouts who earned the organization’s highest achievement at the Annual Girl Scout Gold Awards Ceremony. One of these scouts is Granby’s Mackenzie Janski.

Celia Eggert, 64, formally of Granby, CT, passed away peacefully at Apple Rehab Coccomo in Meriden, CT after a prolonged illness on August 11, 2025.
Granby Public Schools Building Facilities Department has made major strides this past summer, working to improve buildings and facilities.
In preparation for the new school year, the facilities team has ensured that school environments are clean, safe, and welcoming for students and staff. They have thoroughly deep-cleaned classrooms and other school facilities.
The Stop & Shop grocery store in Granby has selected the Citizens for a Better Granby (publishers of the Drummer) to receive a portion of the sales of its Community Bags during September. The $2.50 reusable bags both benefit the environment by reducing the use of paper and plastic bags and yield a $1 donation to CBG. That sounds like a WIN-WIN to us!
Dave Roberts, vice president of the United Nations Association of Connecticut, recently returned from the 2025 UNA-USA Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C., where he represented Connecticut in a call for global engagement and international cooperation. Held June 22–25, the summit gathered 150 grassroots advocates from 225 chapters across the United States.
The focus of the Social Services Department is to coordinate existing federal, state, regional and local services, to increase community awareness of these services and to develop new programs to meet the needs of Granby residents.

During Open Farm Day on Sept. 14, Salmon Brook Historical Society will host a public opening of the Sadoce Wilcox House, at 145 Simsbury Road in West Granby.
Although rain may have suppressed attendance for the June 29 outdoor arts and education festival celebrating the diversity of humanity, those who attended experienced a high-vibe, uplifting day. Granby Racial Reconciliation (GRR) was pleased to bring many talented groups to Granby as examples of the beauty of our diverse humanity.
The Salmon Brook Historical Society proudly displays a remarkable collection of Aaron Draper Shattuck’s paintings in its Preservation Barn, thoughtfully organized and displayed by Curator Martha Miller.
In the fall of 2020, during the pandemic, the Salmon Brook Historical Society found a way to share Granby’s history outdoors. We called it “A Stroll through Granby History.” The Stroll was an opportunity to both walk and learn; no one went inside any of the homes. We are doing it again!

I have an autumnal personality. Maybe being born in the fall is why I have an affinity for all things rustic and earthy. Nature is an inspiration, a cycle of overlapping endings and beginnings.
It’s been two months since we last shared all that is happening at Holcomb Farm, which means there is so much to share: more than we could ever convey in our monthly Drummer installment (for which we are immensely appreciative). We hope you have found—or will find—time to visit us and experience our beautiful farm and trails for yourselves.
September is upon us. Our hot, steamy months of gardening are turning into cooler nights, shorter days and a slow down to the summer planting season. But we are still contending with the weeds.

What is your favorite barnyard animal? Choices include chicken, cow, donkey, goat, horse, pig and sheep. Each of these has its claim to fame, its singular breed with unique characteristics, definable personalities and very specific uses. Of course, there is no wrong answer. The Granby Land Trust recently released the latest in its series of virtual property tours: this one of the Seth and Lucy Holcombe Preserve in North Granby. This is the fourth in the series, the others offering tours of the Mary Edwards Mountain Property, the Katan-Ensor and Old Messenger Road Preserves, and the Dismal Brook Wildlife Preserve.

The Friends of the Granby Public Libraries (FOGPL) 41st annual book sale in July raised more than $13,350.
According to National Fire Protection Association Statistics, during the five-year period from 2016-2020, US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 343,100 home structure fires per year. These fires caused an annual average of 2,610 civilian deaths, 11,090 civilian fire injuries and $7.6 billion in direct property damage.
