Library used book sale preparations begin

Spring is here and the Friends of Granby Public Library are eagerly preparing for donations to the Granby Public Library’s 36th annual Used Book Sale. Donations of gently used goods will be accepted starting Saturday, June 2, through Saturday, Aug. 4, at several convenient Granby locations during their normal business hours: Geissler’s Supermarket, 9 Bank Street; Farmington Valley YMCA, 97 Salmon Brook Street; Granby Public Library, 15 North Granby Road.

Residents’ comments on East Street from April 1 BOS meeting

The following comments expressed during the public session of the April 1 Board of Selectmen meeting were inadvertently omitted from the May Drummer. Nelson Toussaint is upset that resident’s questions cannot be answered in the public session of board meetings; was disturbed that the town’s purchase of 107 East Street was not a separate line item in that budget vote; doesn’t agree with the process as it is being carried out now.

Jeff Stanwood, business teacher at the high school, along with student DECA members Jenna Dauria, Marile Marzo, Jacob McDonald, David Migliaccio, Owen Plourde, Andrew Quagliaroli, Jillian Thrall, and Joseph Wix presented to the board after attending the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, hospitality and management.

The public hearing of an application seeking approval of a Special Permit for a restaurant with alcoholic beverages and live entertainment at 261 Salmon Brook Street opened at 7 p.m.

Timothy Brignole, Trustee of the Kimberly Edith Maynard Trust that owns the property, presented the application. He stated the current owner of Vito’s on the Water, located in Windsor, would relocate to Granby.

 Business Manager’s Report

Business Manager Anna Robbins, presented the March statement of accounts that reports a negative forecast of $251K, which is $97K worse than the prior month. Special education expenditures are projected to be unfavorable at $297K, which is $57K less favorable than last month.

May State Conventions have been held by both Democrats and Republicans for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Chris Murphy, the U.S. House of Representatives seat currently held by John Larson, the 62nd State Representative seat currently held by Bill Simanski, the 7th State Senate seat currently held by John Kissel, the 8th State Senate seat currently held by Kevin Witkos and the 9th District Probate Judge seat currently held by Cynthia Becker. If either party has a contested nomination for any of the above positions at its convention or caucus, the candidates not chosen will have the option to petition for a primary.

62nd District Republicans endorse Simanski

Area Republicans unanimously endorsed Bill Simanski as their candidate for the 62nd District House Seat on May 16. “It is an honor run for a fifth term as your state representative,” Simanski said during the party convention held at the Granby Police Department Community room.

IMPACT Melanoma and Bright Guard install sunscreen dispensers in Granby parks

IMPACT Melanoma, a non-profit aimed at providing education, prevention and support for the most serious form of skin cancer, has provided the Granby Recreation and Leisure Services Department sunscreen with four dispensers for public use, part of the nonprofit’s Practice Safe Skin program. “Upon learning of this program, I knew it was the right thing to do for the patrons of our recreation facilities.
