FY19 budget discussed at public hearing

Between 75 and 80 residents attended the Public Hearing on the 2018-2019 budget held at the Granby Memorial High School auditorium on April 9. The $45,254,588 budget represents a 2.78 percent increase in expenditures over the current budget, leading to a 1.98 percent increase in the mill rate.

Webster slate wins Granby Democratic caucus

The Amanda Webster Slate was voted to attend the Democratic Connecticut House of Representatives convention this May by the Democratic voters of Granby. All registered Granby Democrats were invited to attend and vote for the slate of delegates pledged to their preferred candidate.

Congratulations to Addyson Earl, a 6th grader at GMMS, who was a finalist in a PBS talent competition that had over 1,000 entries. Middle school students Kylie Coxon, Galen Platt, Alexa Becker, Caelum Janski, Jason Brown, and Alec Jedamonov participated in a regional history day competition at Manchester High School and will advance to the state contest in April.

Changing school start times

The Granby Board of Education (BOE) recently charged the Superintendent of Schools to conduct an administrative study to explore the impact of different school start times on students’ wellness and academic performance and to assess the feasibility of the implementation of new start times for all Granby schools. In Connecticut, school districts such as Greenwich, Wilton, Guilford, West Hartford, and Simsbury have implemented, or are currently exploring, new start times.

UNICO Italian club to host annual pasta dinner May 4

The Granby UNICO Club will host its annual pasta dinner on Friday, May 4, on Manitook Lake at 70 Lakeside Drive, with continuous open seating from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy a great home-cooked Italian meal featuring penne pasta with sauce, meatballs, sausage, salad, fresh bread and beverages. Dessert is a make-your-own ice cream sundae with ice cream donated by Grass Roots.

Burkhart-Wundt and Hall honored at Granby Chamber awards dinner

The Granby Chamber of Commerce honored Jen Burkhart-Wundt as its Business Person of the Year and Jim Hall as Humanitarian of the Year at the Chamber’s 15th Annual Awards Banquet at Holcomb Farm in March. The chamber also recognized Evans Automotive as New Business of the Year and presented a special Community Service Award to Ralph Johnson upon his retirement as owner/operator of ABC Pizza.
