Rather it was the idea of Tudor and Laura Holcomb as expressed in the terms of the deed by which they gave their farmland to the University of Connecticut. Do you have a few hours this spring to spread the word about the Pedals for Progress and Sewing Peace used bicycle and sewing machine collection? For 16 years, local volunteers have worked with Pedals for Progress to host successful collections that have touched the lives of more than 1,600 families in the developing world. Over the last 27 years, Pedals for Progress, a New Jersey based 501c3, has received, processed and donated over 153,000 bicycles and 4,000 used sewing machines to partner charities in 38 developing world countries.

Women Take Flight
The New England Air Museum will hold its annual Women Take Flight event on Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in commemoration of Women’s History Month. Visitors of all ages are invited to celebrate women’s contributions to aerospace history through special events, hands-on activities and lectures from special guest speakers including Catherine Young, business developer, General Aviation Airports, Connecticut Airport Authority; Melissa Mathiasen, test pilot, Sikorsky Aircraft; and MSgt.
Copper Hill United Methodist Church is hosting a corned beef dinner with home baked desserts on Saturday, March 10. There will be a single sitting at 5 p.m. Adults, $12; under 12, $6, and pre-schoolers are no-charge.
The Granby Camera Club will meet on Monday, March 5, at the Granby Senior Center at 7 p.m. The program will feature guest photographer Lisa Cuchara, who will share her talents and photographic interests with the club. The scavenger hunt words are favorite, still life, and blue hour (the hour before sunrise or the hour after sunset).

The youth at Pilgrim Covenant Church will host a Swedish Pancake Breakfast and Scandinavian Bake Sale on Saturday, March 3, 8 to 10 a.m. at Pilgrim Covenant Church, 605 Salmon Brook St., just before the Massachusetts state line. This is a donation-breakfast benefiting the youth groups.
On Wednesday, March 7, the Tainted Beauty Studio with Angela Cortez returns for a program entitled The Expressive Beauty Bunch for the Granby Women’s Breakfast program. Breakfast at the Granby Senior Center starts at 8:30 a.m. with the program beginning at 9 a.m. Cost is $4.
Mary’s Kitty Korner, a no-kill cat shelter in Granby Center, is looking for volunteers to help care for its kitties until they find their “fur-ever” homes. If you love cats and have some time to spare on a weekday morning or evening or on a weekend morning or afternoon the shelter would love to hear from you.
After a two-month winter break, the Granby Civic Club will meet on Thursday, March 15, 1 p.m. in the Senior Center. A local resident will share the Granby history of the retired gentlemen’s sport of Foxhound hunting.
The Granby Cubs are a new wood bat baseball team for ages 25 and older starting play in the Connecticut Men’s Senior Baseball North League. The team will play double headers on Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. starting April 15.

Two candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for the 62nd House District will appear together on Tuesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in the Granby Town Hall Meeting Room to address interested voters and answer questions. Amanda Webster and Valerie Eastwood, both of Granby, have been campaigning throughout the district for months, talking with individual voters, groups and town committees.
Longtime attorney and healthcare advocate Valerie Eastwood is throwing her hat into the ring as Democratic candidate for District 62, Connecticut House of Representatives. “I am delighted to declare my candidacy for the State House of Representatives,” Eastwood said.
