Fifty years ago, David Bale, David Hildreth and Dennis Lobo met in the Bales’ kitchen and organized a race to be held on Earth Day that year. The year was 1971, it was the very first Earth Day, and the road race they planned started a tradition that celebrated its 50th year on Sept. 18.
The Granby Board of Parks and Recreation is seeking input from your household to better understand the community’s parks and recreation needs, wants and satisfaction with current facilities and services offered.
The 50th running of the Granby Road Race went off without a hitch in perfect weather on Sept. 18. The race, founded by David Hildreth, David Bale and Dennis Lobo in May 1971, is one of Connecticut’s oldest race events.
I fish for lots of reasons: quality time with friends and family; the opportunity to enjoy and learn about nature; the satisfaction of eating a fish I caught and prepared. But I am also drawn to the possibility of catching a remarkable fish, maybe even a state record.
It sounds as if it all started in David Bale’s kitchen one evening about 50 years ago.

You might think my fishing buddies and I have a certain level of sophistication and refinement. At a minimum, you’re thinking, enough to establish rules of etiquette that govern our behavior when we are out on the boat together.
