Take Me Again, Dad

Many of my favorite childhood memories involve fishing. It’s what I did to escape the daily upheaval of growing up in our tumultuous, single-parent household.
We were on our way to Lake Champlain, a trip we take every year, when Dave said to me: “It’s time for you to get a big-boy reel. I know you like the simplicity of your Zebcos, but the new baitcasters are being advertised as essentially tangle proof.”
“What are you talking about?”
I was surprised Dave was making this pitch again.
My father-in-law Jim (known to family and many friends as “Cowpa”) was a big part of our lives. He was a kind, selfless man who always put the interests of others ahead of his own.
I fish a lot, sometimes alone, sometimes with my kids or friends. Sometimes in local bass tournaments, I’ve traveled great distances to fish, working to fulfill my dream of fishing in every state with my son.
