Every winter, with the blessing of our wives, a group of us dads get away for a weekend. It’s our time to forget our jobs, have a few laughs and bond over an activity we all enjoy.

One Last Miracle

It was a couple of weeks before Christmas 2002. We were at the home of a beagle breeder we had contacted to see if she had any puppies available.

You see, I’m part of a group of consumers that contributes approximately $7 million a year to projects throughout the state designed to conserve and enhance fish and wildlife populations and their habitats. These projects are funded through a program commonly known as the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program.

We were on our way to Lake Champlain, a trip we take every year, when Dave said to me: “It’s time for you to get a big-boy reel. I know you like the simplicity of your Zebcos, but the new baitcasters are being advertised as essentially tangle proof.”

“What are you talking about?”

I was surprised Dave was making this pitch again.
