The season has changed, but the Farm Store stays open

This year, for the first time, Holcomb Farm’s CSA and Farm Store will be open all winter long, Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Photos by Hanna Malzenski

Fall has arrived and Holcomb Farm’s fields and farm store are showing it.

The new farm store is stocked with an ever-changing selection of seasonal favorites grown at Holcomb Farm, alongside thoughtfully curated, sustainably produced goods from other local producers. If you haven’t visited yet, there’s no better time. The store’s shelves and displays are filled with pumpkins, squash, root vegetables, brassicas, leafy greens and all your fall favorites.

Meanwhile, the farm crew has been busy harvesting the last of the summer crops, gathering fall crops for the CSA and Farm Store, cleaning up the fields and getting cover crops planted before winter.

This year brought an incredible growing season, with beautiful, bountiful harvests that kept the CSA and farm store stocked. Farm Manager Joe O’Grady made the decision to leave more fields than ever to rest. Those fields were planted with cover crops, an investment in soil health that will support the long-term productivity of the fields.

The farm crew is looking forward to its first winter in the new store. If you missed signing up for the Winter CSA, don’t worry, you can still enjoy fresh, seasonal farm products and a wonderful selection of local goods all winter long. Come shop for local foods for your holiday table and unique local products for holiday giving.

Harvest Evening celebrates a successful season

This year, the Friends of Holcomb Farm introduced a new way to celebrate the harvest and mark the close of another successful season. Supporters gathered for a festive, cocktail-style evening, featuring light bites from Julien’s, farm-to-table pizza from the New Haven Pizza Truck, seasonal cocktails and mocktails from Mobile Mixology and gourmet gelato.

The evening offered a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the organization’s accomplishments over the past year, honor the hard work of volunteers, recognize the dedication of Holcomb Farm’s crew and staff and celebrate the community that makes it all possible.

Special thanks to Christiane Pimentel-Olatokunbo and Virginia Bette for chairing this spectacular event, and to all the volunteers whose time and hard work helped make the evening such a success.

The Friends of Holcomb Farm is grateful to everyone who joined us! We’re so grateful for your continued support and are already looking forward to celebrating together again next year.

FOHF President Dave Emery speaks to the supporters. Much of the evening was enjoyed on the terrace. Thanks to Shirley Murtha for event photos.

Make Holcomb Farm part of your year-end giving

Unrestricted operating support from members of the community is essential to the health of the Friends of Holcomb Farm, the nonprofit organization responsible for managing agricultural operations, land stewardship, and charitable work at Holcomb Farm. These contributions provide the organization with the flexibility to respond to changing needs, embrace new opportunities, build on past accomplishments, and continue moving the organization forward.

Last year, the Friends of Holcomb Farm did not conduct an annual appeal, focusing instead on the significant fundraising effort needed to transform the old church building into a first-rate farm facility. This year presents an opportunity to build on that momentum and continue strengthening the organization’s work.

We hope you will consider making a gift to the Friends of Holcomb Farm General Fund this year. Contributions at any level will help the organization preserve and care for this special place, grow and share nourishing food and respond to the needs of our community.

To make a gift, please visit our website, holcombfarm.org, or mail a check to: Holcomb Farm, 87 Simsbury Road, West Granby, CT 06090. Gifts of $35 or more will make you a member of this incredible organization. Thank you!

A harvest that gives back. Fresh Access volunteers harvested more than 2.5 tons of apples and peaches at local farms for distribution to neighbors in need. Many thanks to these dedicated helpers. Eric Lukingbeal’s photo of the tupelo on the Holcomb Tree Trail shows off its beautiful fall color. The Holcomb Tree Trail is an arboretum managed by the Friends of Holcomb Farm at the historic Holcomb Farm. Located in fields that once were grazing land for dairy cows, the Holcomb Tree Trail is now a beautiful place for quiet outdoor activity and enjoyment, as well as a place for education and scientific study.
