There will be a Democratic primary at Granby Town Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 11, with early voting, also at Town Hall, from Aug. 3 to Aug. 9. That primary will include candidates vying for Governor and for the 1st U.S. Congressional district.

As of June 15, there is no Republican primary scheduled for 2026.

The deadline to change party affiliation to vote in the August primary has passed. However, new voters and unaffiliated voters can change their registration until noon on Aug. 10 to vote in the primary.

You may register or make changes to your current registration online at the CT Secretary of State’s website (go to portal.ct.gov/SOTS and tap or click on Elections and Voting, or go directly to voterregistration.ct.gov/OLVR/welcome.do). Contact the Registrars’ office at 860-844-5322 for other options.

Best days for early voting

The seven days of early voting include the weekend of Aug. 8 and 9. Saturday and Sunday are usually the slowest days at Town Hall with the shortest wait to vote.

Rules we must follow

Some voting rules are made at the state level and are beyond town control.

Only registered Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary. Same for Republicans when they have a primary.

If you changed from one party to another after May 11, you cannot vote in your new party’s primary this year. See above for the deadline if you are a new voter or currently unaffiliated.

If you register for the first time or change your registration during the early voting period to qualify for the primary, it won’t be effective until the next day if you register before noon, or for two days if you register after noon. So, register online on the Secretary of the State’s website and save an extra trip to Town Hall

There is no Early Voting on Aug. 10, the day before the primary. However, you can request an Absentee Ballot at the Town Clerk’s office up until 12 noon that day.

Voters at the polls must announce their address and name “to the official checker or checkers in a tone sufficiently loud and clear as to enable all the election officials present to hear the same.” Even if you’re someone we’ve known personally for years, we’re just following the law.

The evolution of voting in America

In observance of America’s 250th anniversary, we’ve put together a timeline of major changes to U.S. election laws. Do you know how many electoral votes George Washington received when he was elected for his first term as President? Which state was the first to allow elections to be conducted entirely by mail? Check out the timeline on our webpage at granby-ct.gov/274/Registrars-of-Voters for the answers.

Poll workers are needed

The Registrar’s office is always seeking poll workers to help for 2026 events. Send us an email if you can help this year. Volunteer poll workers must be at least 16 years old and can choose to volunteer for a few hours to fit their schedules. One mandatory session of training is required to serve for each event.
