The Granby Registrars of Voters are preparing for a busy voting season this fall. On Nov. 3 there will be a general election that includes voting for candidates running for Governor, for U.S. Congress and for other regional and state offices. On Dec. 8 there will be a town vote on five local bonding questions.
Important Dates to Remember
Sept. 29: Preliminary voter registration session to amend the voter list will be at the Registrars of Voters office in the Town Hall, 1–3 p.m.
Oct. 2: Absentee ballots for the November General Election will be available to electors in the Town Clerk’s office.
Oct. 14: Testing and sealing of the ballot tabulator machines to ensure that each tabulator is prepared and ready for use is open to the general public in the Town Hall Meeting Room at 1 p.m.
Oct. 16: Voter registration deadlines to be eligible to vote in the General Election: mail-in registrations must be received, voter registrations submitted at the DMV must be completed by the close of business, online registrations must be submitted by 11:59 p.m.
Oct. 16: Special last day voter registration session for electors who become 18 years of age, U.S. citizens or residents of Granby on or before Nov. 3, at the Registrars of Voters office in the Town Hall, 9 a.m.–8 p.m.
Oct. 19–Nov. 1: Early Voting for the Nov. 3 General Election will be held at the Town Hall, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. every day, except for Oct. 27 and 29 when the hours will be extended to 8 a.m.–8 p.m.
Nov. 2: Voter registration session for electors who became eligible to vote after Oct. 16 at the Registrars of Voters office in the Town Hall, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Nov. 3: General Election will be held at Granby Memorial High School Community Gym, 6 a.m.–8 p.m.
Note: Same day voter registration will be available each day of Early Voting and on Nov. 3 in the Registrars’ office at the Town Hall. Electors who register this way will be eligible to vote the day they register. Proof of identity and residency are required.
Early Voting
Voters can now put their ballots directly into a voting machine (tabulator) so no more Early Voting envelopes. There is still a statewide check to ensure that no one votes more than once and there is an affirmation to sign when a ballot is received.
Tabulators
Granby will once again be using tabulators that both receive and scan your ballot, as well as display a result message, either that your ballot was successfully processed, or that it could not be processed for specific reasons. It’s important that voters wait until their ballot is processed by the tabulator, which only takes a few seconds, so that they see the message that is displayed. If the tabulator cannot process the ballot, a poll worker will assist while still ensuring confidentiality.
Poll workers needed
The Registrars’ office is always seeking interested Granby residents to work as poll workers at voting events. Volunteer poll workers must be at least 16 years old and can choose to volunteer for shifts that fit their schedules.
Poll worker positions include greeters, checkers, ballot clerks and machine tenders. One mandatory session of training is required to serve for each event (multiple sessions are offered for each event to accommodate a variety of schedules).
