Next Steps
With the failure to approve the 2026-27 budget on April 20, the process repeats with a machine vote on Monday, May 4 from 8 a.m.–8 p.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room in Town Hall, not in the high school.
Please bring an ID, preferably a photo ID. The check-in lines will be separated based on street address. Non-registered Granby property owners will also be allowed to vote if their name appears on the last published grand list, but they will need to fill out a special form at the assessor’s table.
Absentee ballots can be filed, in person only, with the town clerk during Town Hall business hours, up until Friday, May 1 at noon.
If the budget does not pass on May 4, the Board of Finance will present another amended budget proposal at a Public Hearing on May 11, with a machine vote May 18. The absentee ballot procedure will be repeated, with the deadline being Friday, May 15 at noon.
Upcoming events
Upcoming voting opportunities include anticipated Democratic and Republican primaries on Tuesday, Aug. 11, and a local bonding referendum, with a date to be determined.
Unlike some other states, Connecticut’s unaffiliated and minor party voters are not allowed to vote in primaries. Connecticut State party rules prohibit cross voting in another political party’s primary. You must be a registered member of the party to vote in that party’s primary.
Changes in affiliation from one political party to another must be made by May 11 in order to vote in the State primary. However, new voters and unaffiliated voters can register in a major party up until noon on Aug. 10 and vote in their new party’s primary.
You may make changes yourself online at the Connecticut Secretary of the State’s website or contact the Registrars’ office for other options.
The General Election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with early voting days Oct. 19–Nov. 1. That election will include races for Governor and U.S. House Representative.
High School Registration Drive
The Registrars of Voters conducted a Spring Voter Registration Drive at the Granby Memorial High School on April 2. Seventeen students registered at the event, in addition to the 73 students who registered in the fall. We also discussed the absentee ballot process—important to those who will be away at college in the fall.
Poll workers are needed
The Registrars’ office has compiled an email list of poll workers and sent out a request for help for 2026 events. New poll workers are always welcome. Send us an email if you can help this year.
Volunteer poll workers must be at least 16 years old and can choose to volunteer for a few hours to fit their schedules. One mandatory session of poll worker training is required to serve for each event. For more information, or to apply, contact the Registrars at registrarofvoters@granby-ct.gov
