Kathleen Scranton fashions vintage books into one-of-a-kind purses

Kathleen Scranton, an artist from Coventry, fashions vintage hard-cover books into distinctive purses. As guest speaker at the Granby Woman’s Breakfast meeting in March, Scranton described the process she follows during the 10 to 15 hours required to bring about her unique form of magic: transforming old books into purses, purses that many would also consider pieces of fine art.

“I don’t travel a great deal but this was definitely one of my favorite trips.” So began Jennifer Jalbert’s narrative about her and her husband’s 2024 trip to Iceland. Coincidentally, Suzanne Scarcella and her husband had visited Iceland one year earlier in 2023.

Cheri Burke spends her weekends at hockey rinks. She is the mother of four high-level ice hockey players, ages 14 to 20. While Burke herself does not skate, she is the lynch pin in the family’s love affair with this action-packed, boisterous sport.

In September, the first article in this series stated, “Some consider the goat to be ‘the new dog.’ A goat’s potential to be a delightful pet will be explored later.” Be assured that no competition between goats and dogs is suggested or implied: only an opening of one’s mind to a variation, a novel outlook on what can be a “pet.”

What is your favorite barnyard animal? Choices include chicken, cow, donkey, goat, horse, pig and sheep. Each of these has its claim to fame, its singular breed with unique characteristics, definable personalities and very specific uses. Of course, there is no wrong answer. Animal lovers’ favorites are not debatable.
