J. Stewart Huey, of Los Angeles, California, passed away after a brief illness on July 24, 2026 at the age of 62 surrounded by the love of his friends who were family to him.
Stew was born on September 18, 1963 in Alameda, CA to Brenda (Tastula) and Martin Huey. Throughout his life, he was known for his infectious laugh, his huge bear hugs and his ability to bring laughter to any occassion. He approached life with curiosity and a generous spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He built his professional life centered on creativity and the arts including inspiring passion for both in young people over many decades of teaching at YPI.
Beyond his work, Stew had a passion for food and the culinary arts that rivaled all, finding joy in manning the grill at every event and experimenting with new recipes. He celebrated beauty in life with his photography and recently rekindled his interest in pool and enjoyed time with those who shared his interest.
To those closest to him, Stew was a beloved friend and was considered as family in many circles. His thoughtful advice, sense of humor, and Viking presence will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and love that will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
Stew is survived by his brother Peter Huey (Brewster, MA) and his partner Dartania Emery (Newport News, VA), sister Kristen Mattson and niece Isabella Mattson (Granby, CT) and a beloved group of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Brenda Huey.
A celebration of life service will be held in September in Los Angeles. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or that those wishing to honor Stew’s memory do so through acts of kindness and service to others.
Though he is no longer with us, Stew’s memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
