Are you a high school or college student interested in media, marketing or journalism? A retiree curious about the inner-workings of your local newspaper? Or, perhaps you are an aspiring writer, photographer or researcher who wants to learn more about your community.
If so, we encourage you to apply for the Drummer’s internship program. The Drummer received a generous grant from the Granby Community Fund to support a six-week continuing education internship in local journalism, open to all Granby residents, ages 16 and up. The internship program will begin in late January 2027.
The internship will be led by managing editor Josh Anderson, who formerly served as a professor of English and continues to teach a wide range of writing workshops throughout the country. Anderson will be joined by experienced Drummer volunteers and invited special guests, including professional journalists, photographers and artists, among others.
Each intern enrolled in the Drummer internship program will get up to 50 hours of hands-on experience and training in the behind-the-scenes efforts of Granby’s award-winning local newspaper, with workshops focused on pitching and writing feature articles, journalistic research methods, interviewing sources, journalistic photography and creative approaches to layout and design.
The internship will also include field trips to local sites to conduct field interviews and research, as well as visits from guest speakers.
By the end of the program, all participants will pitch, research and write (or co-author) an article in the Drummer that draws upon the skills and experiences gained during the internship. Interns will also have the opportunity to share what they learned at a public workshop open to the greater Granby community.
If you are interested in applying for the Drummer’s internship program, please email Anderson at editor@granbydrummer.org to introduce yourself and tell us what you hope to get from the internship program. Applications received by Nov. 1 will receive first priority. The Application deadline closes Dec. 1—or until slots are full.
The Drummer and the board of Citizens for a Better Granby would like to thank the Granby Community Fund for supporting the Drummer internship program. We hope to see your application to enroll in the internship or to see you at our public workshops and events. Stay tuned for updates on our website and on our social media pages.
