Special Events

Live Well Expo: Wednesday, Sept. 16, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. Discover resources to help you live your healthiest life. Meet with local vendors, participate in health screenings, learn about community services and explore programs designed to support wellness, independence and active aging. First 100 pre-registered will receive a free bagged lunch sponsored by our friends from Carmon Funeral Home. Free to attend, open to the public.

25th Anniversary Open House: Thursday, Sept. 24, 4 p.m. Celebrate 25 amazing years of community, connection and memories. Stop by for light refreshments and celebrate as we reflect on how far we’ve come and look ahead to what’s next. Although no cost, please pre-register.

Lifelong Learning

Protect Yourself From Scammers: Wednesday, Sept. 9, 10 a.m. Scams targeting elderly adults are on the rise. Join members of the Division of Criminal Justice and the Granby PD for a talk about Elder Financial Fraud. The discussion will cover different types of scams that are commonly used, how to stay safe from these scams and what to do if you find yourself involved in a scam. Free.

Medicare Made Perfectly Clear: Thursday, Sept. 10, 10 a.m. Madison (Roberson) Levins returns with her Medicare Made Perfectly Clear presentation. Gain a comprehensive understanding of the different parts of Medicare (Parts A, B, C and D). Learn about eligibility criteria, enrollment periods and supplemental coverage options. Ask questions. Free.

Holcomb Farm Tree Trail Hike: Friday, Sept. 11, 10 a.m. Join Jack Lareau and Eric Luckingbeal on a guided Holcomb Farm tree trail hike. As part of America 250, Friends of Holcomb Farm set up a scavenger hunt to find the state trees for the original 13 states with Betsy Ross flags as prizes for completing the search. Starting at the main campus, the total walk is less than a mile with a gentle hill with an optional extension to view more trees. Free.

Bloom Where Planted, Herb Mini Wreath: Monday, Sept. 14, 10 a.m. Beautiful decoration and a useful way to dry you herbs all in one. Learn hands on how to make a small herbal wreath using culinary herbs and a grapevine wreath form. Led by Amy Lopez. Free.

Sharpie Coasters: Friday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m. MATT on the Go is a Mattatuck Museum program initiative that allows us to bring art and history from the Museum to local communities, senior centers and libraries. As we close out summer, add a pop of color to your living space by designing unique coasters using a fun and creative technique that makes vibrant colors bloom and swirl. Experiment with different patterns and color combinations to create beautiful pieces that are both functional and decorative. Free.

Tarot Reading Class: Tuesdays, Sept. 15–Oct. 6, 1 p.m. Gail Altschwager will hold four one-hour classes on understanding and reading the Tarot. Since each class builds on the class before, participants need to attend all sessions. Topics covered include Major Arcana, Minor Arcana, doing readings and ethics of divination. Each participant must bring their own tarot deck to each class. Space is limited to seven participants. Free.

Baseball’s Little Secret: Monday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m. Let’s delve into the captivating tale of a WWII spy who served with the OSS and was honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom for his covert operations. Prior to his espionage career, he excelled as a linguist and a baseball player, showcasing his talents by speaking multiple languages and playing for several major league teams. Throughout his tenure as spy, he undertook crucial missions, including one where he was tasked with eliminating a German scientist to thwart the development of an atom bomb. Join John Cilio as he unravels the enigmatic double life of this catcher turned spy. Get ready to be amazed by his extraordinary story! Free.

Angel Flight With Carol Harris: Wednesday, Sept. 23, 11 a.m. Join Angel Flight pilot Carol Harris as she explains this unique style of medical transport. She will share with you the many flights she has taken, and what these special flights entail to transport an ill person quickly and safely. Free.

Dine and Drive to White Horse Country Pub: Monday, Sept. 14, depart at 10:45 a.m. Cost: $5.

Shopping at Holyoke Mall: Monday, Sept. 21, depart at 9:30 a.m. Cost: $5.

Pumpkintown USA: Monday, Sept. 28, depart center at 9:15 a.m. Pumpkintown U.S.A., located in East Hampton, has been a favorite fall family destination for over 20 years. Visitors of all ages delight in 100+ Pumpkinhead people and their pets in two venues, The Village and The Forest, each featuring multiple creative settings. Cost: $10 plus any optional excursions you select.

Ongoing Programs

Lunch Program: Every Tuesday and Thursday, 12–1 p.m. The lunch program offers a healthy, low-cost lunch for seniors prepared and cooked at the center and the opportunity to join with others. This is a great opportunity to get out and meet new people. Monthly menus are available at the Senior Center. Reservations are required, and are accepted until noon Friday for the following week by calling 860-844-5352. Cost $5.

COA Coffee Hour: Wednesday, Sept. 9, 10 a.m. Join us for coffee and conversation with members of the Commission on Aging. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your ideas or simply connect with others in the community.
