Play being held at Old New-Gate Prison
This summer, audiences will descend—literally and figuratively—into one of Connecticut’s most powerful historic sites for The Slippery Truth, an immersive new play by the site-specific theatre company Plays in Place.
Set against the turbulent final years of the American Revolution, The Slippery Truth draws from a dramatic real event: the 1781 escape of Loyalist prisoners from New-Gate Prison. As Generals Washington and Rochambeau were coordinating the campaign that would end the war, a violent breakout unfolded in Connecticut. In the aftermath, prison trustee John Forward interrogated guards and prisoners in an effort to uncover what truly happened—and quickly discovered that someone was lying.
Staged throughout the prison grounds and within the legendary copper mine itself, the play invites audiences to step inside this investigation and experience the layered realities of war, captivity and loyalty. This show is written by Producing Artistic Director, Patrick Gabridge, and directed by Zoë Golub-Sass.
Performances run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, July 10 to Aug. 30 at the Old New-Gate Prison and Copper Mine on Newgate Road in East Granby.
Doors open at 5 p.m. and the performance begins promptly at 5:30 p.m. During Act 2, audience members may choose between two immersive tracks: descending into the copper mine or remaining above ground for a parallel experience. Visitors who enter the mine should wear close-toed shoes and bring a jacket.
