On May 9, thanks to Town Clerk Jen Espinal and Animal Control Officer Jen Abalan, the public was invited to an Open House at the Animal Shelter on Salmon Brook Street to view the recent upgrades in the facility. At the same time, dog and cat owners also got their pets vaccinated against rabies and/or renewed their licenses. A steady stream of people from Granby, Hartland, Simsbury and Hartford took the town up on the offer between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. They were greeted by members of the Granby Police Department and the department’s new rabbit mascot.

The vaccinations were provided by the team of Anne Creden, DVM and Dawn McGee of Salmon Brook Veterinary Hospital. Abalan and Izabella Owens handled intake and payment ($20 per pet). Espinal handled dog licenses—first time or renewals.

There were plenty of treats available for both animals and humans. Town Manager Mike Walsh was steaming hot dogs with the usual condiments. When one visitor replied that probably his dog would want one, Walsh answered, “Whatever you do with it is entirely up to you.”

With the exception of one cranky cat and one tiny fearful dog, the event seemed to be pleasant for everyone. A total of 38 pets were vaccinated.
