Vintage Buttons: May 8 at 10 a.m. Buttons, over time, have become small pieces of history reflecting the craftsmanship, artistry and cultural values of their time. From their origins in ancient civilizations to their decorative use in early Europe, when men dressed like peacocks, buttons have played a significant role in both everyday life and haute couture. In this 50-minute presentation, John Cilio will explore the beauty and functionality that created the history of vintage buttons. He will delve into the materials and techniques used to create them, their evolution through the ages and their continuing significance in contemporary style. Understanding the stories behind a button can reveal an enticing blend of art, culture and history. The Time is Golden 1919-1939: Monday, May 11 at 10 a.m. The Golden Age of flying, the time between World War I and II, was the most exciting and revolutionary time for flight. Heroic pioneers of the sky made historic flights to and from LI, but by far the most important event of the age was the epic flight of Charles Lindbergh, which revolutionized and popularized aviation like nothing else.
