Spring and summer programs at the Y

Spring is an exciting time at the Farmington Valley YMCA as we look ahead to warmer weather, outdoor activities and opportunities for families to connect and stay active together. As the season changes, the YMCA is excited to offer several programs and events that bring the community together while helping kids and families build healthy habits.

On Saturday, April 18, 10 a.m.–12 p.m., the Y will host Healthy Kids Day, a free community event designed to inspire kids and families to stay active and engaged throughout the summer months. This is a fun-filled morning with activities for children of all ages. Families will have the chance to explore activity stations hosted by YMCA staff and community partners. These hands-on stations will focus on keeping kids active, promoting healthy lifestyles, and helping families learn about resources available right here in our community. Children can participate in games, fitness challenges and interactive activities while parents learn about programs and services that support youth development, health, and safety.

Several local partners will join us to make the morning even more engaging. See a fire truck up close and meet local firefighters, explore an ambulance and learn about emergency response and see a boat brought by representatives who will be sharing important information about water safety. Children can challenge themselves on an obstacle course hosted by members of the U.S. Navy, while adults and kids alike can learn about the importance of healthy financial habits and youth financial literacy. The Granby Lions Club will also be offering free vision screenings for children during the event. These experiences give kids the chance to interact with community helpers, try new activities, and learn valuable safety skills in a fun and welcoming environment.

The event will also feature opportunities for families to learn more about YMCA programs, including summer camp, swim lessons, youth sports and wellness programs. Whether you are a longtime YMCA member or visiting for the first time, everyone is welcome to come out, explore and enjoy this free community celebration.

Summer will be here before we know it, and YMCA Summer Camp registration is now open. YMCA camp is a place where kids build friendships, discover new interests, and create lasting memories in a safe and supportive environment. Each day is filled with exciting activities like swimming, sports, arts and crafts, outdoor adventures and team-building games. Campers gain confidence, independence and a sense of belonging while having fun with their peers and dedicated camp staff.

One special program offered is Race4Chase, a youth triathlon training program for children ages 6–12. Participants learn to swim, bike and run while building endurance and confidence. The program focuses on goal setting, perseverance and healthy lifestyles, and it all leads up to the exciting moment when participants complete their first triathlon. It is an incredible opportunity for kids to challenge themselves, stay active and experience the pride of accomplishing something new. Families are encouraged to register early for summer camp as many sessions fill quickly. For any camp-related questions, please reach out to Amanda Fox at amanda.fox@ghymca.org

The YMCA is also looking ahead to another favorite community tradition, the Granby Road Race. This May 2 event brings together runners and walkers of all ages for a day that celebrates health, fitness and community spirit. Whether you are an experienced runner looking to set a personal best or simply want to enjoy a fun and active day with family and friends, the Granby Road Race offers something for everyone.

As families begin to spend more time around pools, lakes and beaches, the YMCA encourages everyone to keep water safety at top of mind. Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental injury for children, but many of these incidents are preventable with proper education and supervision. Parents and caregivers can help keep children safe by ensuring kids learn basic swimming skills, encouraging the use of properly fitted life jackets during boating and open water activities and always maintaining active supervision when children are near water. The YMCA is proud to support water safety in our community through swim lessons and educational outreach that help families stay safe and confident in and around the water.
