On Nov. 15, 17 Girl Scouts from Granby, East Granby and Hartland participated in an event to honor veterans who have served our country. The scouts had the opportunity to hear inspiring stories from two women in the military, Senior Airman Ashley Seger of the Connecticut Air National Guard and Claire Cashwell, Commander American Legion Post #59.

The women spoke about being in the military, including what it was like to be in a foreign country and the rigor of being in the military. The scouts also learned flag etiquette, such as how to properly display the American flag, how to carry it in a parade and how to properly fold the flag. The girls took turns applying their new knowledge by partnering into groups and taking turns folding and carrying an American flag.

The girl scouts brought in donations, mainly non-perishable foods, hygiene and baby products. These donations were purchased from the Troop’s own funds and were given to service members of the Connecticut Air National Guard affected by the government shutdown in the fall. This exercise benefitted those in our community and taught the girls compassion for people who need a lifting hand. To a young girl, seeing a woman in the military reminds them that they too can achieve great things if they have the courage to do so.

The Salmon Brook Service Unit (Girl Scout Troops from Granby, East Granby and Hartland) provides opportunities for girls of all ages to become involved with a variety of activities including community service.
