A love of reading is what inspired 16-year-old Marcus Ivanynyuk to build a pop-up library for the Town of Granby. A junior at Granby Memorial High School, Marcus moved to the United States with his family over a decade ago. He notes, “Books have played a huge role in shaping who I am, and I hope this library helps expose others of all ages to meaningful lessons, information and ideas that can inspire them to dream big.” He also hopes that those who take a book will be inspired to leave one of their own that made a lasting impression on them.

Woodworking is something Marcus has always shared with his dad, especially in stressful times. Over the years, they have built tables, shelves and a dog house. He says most of his projects have been pretty simple since he uses only hand tools, but the desire to make the pop-up library inspired him to take on something a bit more challenging.

Marcus credits his mom, dad and older brother with being his biggest supporters. “Through thick and thin, they’ve pushed me to be my best self and to always stay curious.” He is thankful for the opportunities and the welcoming community he has found here in Granby. From events at the Cossitt Library to those at the Granby Public Library, there’s never a shortage of ways to learn and grow.”

One might be tempted to imagine Marcus will find a career related to literature, but that is not the case. He is going to pursue a career in biomedical engineering.

Next time you are in Granby center, check out the little library on the Green, perhaps take a book that piques your interest, maybe bring one to interest someone else.
