Remembering G. Fox and Co.: Tuesday, Dec. 2, 6:30–7:30 p.m. at GPL. Retail shopping has changed over the years, but in the 1950s most major cities had a landmark department store. In Hartford it was G. Fox and Co. Return to the store’s heyday as we go from floor to floor with presenter Natalie Belanger, public programs manager, Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. Learn about Beatrice Fox Auerbach, the woman who expanded the business ten-fold, instituted innovative sales practices and established pioneering labor reforms. Sponsored by FOGPL and SBHS.

Monday Movie Matinee, The Man Who Invented Christmas: Monday, Dec. 8, 1:30–3:30 p.m. at GPL. This month’s feature film is a fictionalized biopic of Charles Dickens’ struggle to write A Christmas Carol. In 1843 London the author finds himself in financial trouble after writing three unsuccessful novels. Desperate for a hit, Dickens relies on real-life inspiration and his vivid imagination to bring Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and other classic characters found on the pages of the Yuletide tale. Christopher Plummer gives a classic performance and actor Dan Stevens is engaging as a young, distressed Charles Dickens. Rated PG and runs 1 hr. 44 min. Painting Patriotism, Healing Wounds: The Life of Colonel John Trumbull, Patriot Artist: Saturday, Jan. 31, 2–3 p.m., at GPL. Connecticut State Historian emeritus Dr. Walter Woodward shares the life-long struggles of American artist John Trumbull (1756-1843). Trumbull was the son of Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull, a veteran, diplomat, architect and an artist renowned for creating a series of American history paintings. Card Making with Cricut: Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1:30–2:30 p.m. Create professional-looking greeting cards using Cricut Design Space. Cardstock and guided instruction provided.
Custom Jigsaw Puzzles: Saturday, Dec. 13, 10:30–11:30 a.m. Create a fun gift or keepsake when you personalize a jigsaw puzzle with a memorable photo or image. Learn new skills when you use the sublimation printer and heat press.
Makerspace Equipment Training, Adults, Teens 16+, youth ages 10 and up with an adult. Give your creative ideas life. Visit the library’s makerspace and learn to use the 3D printer, laser cutter, sewing and embroidery machines, sublimation printer, vinyl cutter, mug and bottle presses, and all manner of digitizing equipment. Something About The Author: Monday, Dec. 1, 1:30–2:30 p.m. Discussing author Annie Proulx, an American novelist, short story writer and journalist. Proulx won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for her novel The Shipping News (1993). The critically acclaimed film Brokeback Mountain (2005) was adapted from a story included in Close Range: Wyoming Stories (1999) and her novel Barkskins (2016) was adapted into a miniseries in 2020.
Monday, Jan. 5, 1:30–2:30 p.m. Discussing author Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born American writer, activist and former politician. She is a critic of Islam and an advocate for the rights of Muslim women. She was a member of the Dutch parliament and later moved to the United States, becoming a US citizen. John Rusnock leads the discussions.
Millenials Read: Wednesday, Dec. 3, 6:30–8 p.m. Cookie Swap at Simsbury Public Library.
Wednesday, Jan. 7, 6:30–8 p.m. Andy’s Kitchen in Simsbury. Readers in their 20s, 30s, and 40s are invited to no-stress gatherings with others who enjoy reading. Share your personal favorites and hear about others’ current picks. This book-ish group is a partnership between Bloomfield, Granby and Simsbury libraries and open to all. Sci/Fi Fantasy Book Club: Wednesday, Dec. 30, 6–7 p.m. Discussing Existence by David Brin. Astronaut Gerald Livingstone is an orbital garbage collector clearing a hundred-year mess when he spots something unexpected–a sparkling crystal. Within an hour, rumors fill Earth’s info mesh about an “alien artifact.” Is it a message in a bottle, an alien capsule that wants to communicate…but for good or ill?
Wednesday, Jan. 28, 6–7 p.m. Discussing The Road to Roswell by Connie Willis. When level-headed Francie arrives in Roswell, N. M. for her roommate’s UFO-themed wedding complete with a true-believer bridegroom, she can’t help but roll her eyes. Imagine her surprise when she is abducted by one.
