Ways of Listening, Beethoven’s Eroica: Wednesday, Dec. 3, 10 a.m. David Stein returns with Beethoven’s Eroica, a huge, marvelous and joyful expression of heroism and hope. It was written by the young composer during wartime as he emerged from an earlier state of despair. His Fifth Symphony is more famous perhaps, but the Eroica was the most groundbreaking and influential. We will explore the first movement, a “hero’s journey” in music, to hear how it depicts formidable obstacles bravely overcome, and to understand how Beethoven unifies a vast range of emotion and subjective experience and draws the listener in.
Pearl Harbor and The Surprise Puzzle: Friday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. In honor of the upcoming Pearl Harbor Anniversary, John Cilio presents Pearl Harbor and the surprise prize. Eighty-four years ago, the world was rocked by the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor, where Japanese attackers traveled 3,400 miles across the Pacific to carry out their 110-minute assault. But was it truly a surprise? Cilio shares facts from the postwar 1946 Congressional Review of the attack, uncovering top secret government documents, communications and warnings issued at the time. Free.
Matter of Balance: Tuesdays, 1–3 p.m., Jan. 6–Feb. 24. Many older adults experience concerns about falling and so restrict their activities.
