Granby’s fifth graders at Wells Road Intermediate School recently had an incredible opportunity to learn firsthand about the world of journalism from Heather Lockwood, managing editor of The Granby Drummer.
Lockwood shared a presentation on how to be a journalist, offering insight on how to write great articles and the importance of accuracy and honesty in reporting. Her presentation explored a variety of topics, from the history of journalism to developing strong story ideas and the importance of using facts and accuracy in writing.
Students were especially inspired as Lockwood shared personal experiences from her own career. She described journalism as exciting, telling students, “It’s exciting, it’s fun, it’s also a good way to get over your nervousness. It gets you to be more confident in going up and speaking to people.”
Lockwood also highlighted the unique opportunities that come with being a journalist, adding, “You get to go places that other people won’t get to go to.”
The visit left students motivated to explore their own storytelling abilities and to view writing not just as an assignment, but as a way to share meaningful stories with their community.
Students also had the chance to ask questions of Board of Education (BOE) Vice Chair Heather Lombardo, a senior director at ESPN, about her journey in journalism. She shared her experiences in sports journalism and how she and her team have had incredible opportunities meeting athletes.
A huge thank you to Heather Lockwood, Heather Lombardo, and BOE Chair Monica Logan for joining the class and supporting students’ learning!
